En Suite Master Bath Renovation

Nov 2018

A couple in Riverdale had a dated, dark en suite master bathroom with a tiny shower, zero storage and finishes from the 1980's. I created a new floor plan that expanded the shower, provided for new recessed LED lighting and a new dressing area with built-in wardrobes. In order to do this, we removed all the walls, re-located the entry and added a sliding entry door. The enlarged shower is encased in bright, white porcelain tiles, and to create an expansive feel, we included reflective materials, such as a new matte glass vanity, large, glass medicine cabinet and a frameless sliding shower door. A new grab bar, non-slip flooring and teak folding shower seat addressed safety issues.

Brownstone Apartment Jewelbox

Nov 2017

A brownstone apartment in the city suffered from a lackluster 1990's renovation and was sorely in need of an update that reflected the client's need for an Asian-accented tranquil refuge with touches of French style. The U-shaped kitchen was not functional and was re-designed as a galley kitchen with semi-custom blue-grey cabinets that went up to the high ceiling. Under-cabinet lighting and a glass floral backsplash added sparkle. The dark, heavy wood in the living room as painted a lighter, creamy shade to complement the new custom Chinoiserie relaxed roman shades. A warm chocolate brown velvet sofa was added and a custom wood farmhouse-style dining table that can now accommodate guests for entertaining. A new vanity, toile grey wallpaper, faucet, lighting, hardware and glass shower screen make the renovated bath feel more expansive. Marble, woven floor tile adds some glamour. In all the biggest part of the cost was the new kitchen cabinetry and stainless kitchen appliances.

Family Duplex Refresh

Jul 2017

This childrens' rooms' carpet was worn, the window treatments were dated and the paint schemes throughout this family duplex apartment were in need of an overhaul. While the family was drawn to whimsical and decorative patterns, they realized that they needed to tone down some of their design impulses while retaining the whimsy. So, out went dark, confusing color designs and in came calm blues and greens, a map motif fabric roman shade in the son's room and an underwater aquarium theme for new wallpaper in the kids' bathroom. High-quality wool wall-to-wall carpet in neutral tones replaced the worn carpet. And the TV director wife's office got a palette-cleansing robin's egg blue and pale yellow paint scheme. The entire apartment got new blackout roller shades. The re-fresh took about six months, and made the family's life a bit less hectic.

Family Mid-Century Modern Eclectic City Apartment

Aug 2016

This city apartment re-design required new lighting for the kitchen, a kitchen island, new paint, window treatments and new furniture to integrate with the client's extensive art collection. The cost covers all new furnishings, lighting, paint and the design fee. Since it was an open-plan space, the goal was to delineate the separate areas for living/entertaining, dining and cooking while making them cohesive. The space looked on an inner courtyard, so needed a large mirror in the dining area and opaque roller shades to let light in and reflect it while masking the lack of a view. The family of four needed a large sofa, ottoman and side chair, anchored by custom wood side and coffee tables in American walnut. The new extendable dining table was custom-made in walnut, opening up for large family gatherings. Favorites of the family are the art gallery wall above the sofa, the marble and wood-topped kitchen island and the new bottle-glass triple pendants in the kitchen, which sparkle. A final touch was a custom-made bubble chandelier over the dining table.

Belgian Farmhouse-Inspired City Apartment Makeover

Aug 2019

This client envisioned a farmhouse-style re-design of her small apartment, using a combination of existing and new furnishings. We re-painted a few pieces in lighter colors, slipcovered a wingback chair that had been in storage and pared down the use of decorative accessories. New task and ambient lighting and a new floor plan that accommodates more guests for entertaining enlivened the space. A brand-new hand-knotted patterned rug grounded the living area and influenced the choice of accent colors for pillows and artwork. Since the client had framed Belgian lace pieces, we drew inspiration from that country's farmhouse interiors. We emphasized woods, linens and other nubby textures, as a result. The master bedroom was transformed by adding a linen-covered chaise to create a reading nook. Gilded dimmable swing-arm bedside lamps and a new upholstered bed softened the mood. An existing armoire was re-painted and new porcelain hardware was added, and new side tables and a substantial dresser provide more than adequate storage.
