Remodeling Youth

Remodeling Youth came about a 20yr experienced social worker along with 16 yrs in remodeling in high end areas of LA. While taking a job for a friend that was done wrong on her first home buy, she was sold a house with black mold. Out of resources and a place to live I offered to fix her place so she can move in. Along with my son who also has experience in social work and construction we set out to do this work to help a lady in need. For some time my son was trying to help a neighbor teen that appeared to have some emotional outburst and out of control at the time. In the time I got to know the 16 yr old it appeared to me he was struggling from severe ADHD with extremely poor social skills. I asked if his single mom would allow him to work with us for a couple of weeks since he was on vacation and at home his outburst were more frequent and severe . After talking to his mom she agreed this may be helpful. He went to work everyday he was excited he did everything we asked him with enthusiasm. I paid him cash every day after work to allow him to associate work with benefit. He was tired every night came home was pleasant with his family and was excited to go again the next day. During this time other parents with teen boys asked me if I could take their kids. The entire 2 bedroom townhouse remodel took approximately 3 weeks. While we were doing this work, neighbors came by to see the progress and type of work. By the end of 3 weeks we were contracted to remodels 5 more homes. With so much benefit to the kids and the community I had to continue to do it. Teens are taught work and behavioral skills as they learn hands on supervised by two seasoned supervisors with a background in social work. Every one of those homes we remodeled that summer recommend our work to others and 4 yrs later different teens learn to work, develop certain skills, they are taught effective communication and social skills, also they are taught to deal with their MH challenges and coping skills to prevent troubled situations. Once they are comfortable and confident we help them find either part time work that allows them to continue their education or apply full time depending on their situation.
