Bull Creek Master Bath

Oct 2015

This master bath used to be outdated, dark gold, and cramped. It had a built-in corner bathtub and an attached standing shower. This couple wanted a more open, elegant, timeless feel in their master bath. They also wanted to get rid of the tub they never used and convert it into a large shower space. We put built-in shampoo niches and a corner seat, and a fun accent tile strip. The counter was perfect for storage and fit the space well, so we re-finished the cabinetry to make more of a sleek look. We also installed additional storage space for towels, products, etc. The couple had two separate mirrors for their vanity, so we installed one large mirror and it really made the space appear larger. We used brushed nickel fixtures, corner edged double sinks, and a granite countertop with plenty of movement. The countertop served as a beautiful pop and it compliments the paint color nicely. The homeowner found a gorgeous rug that brings everything together and keeps your bare feet warm. This project was a massive transformation and turned out beautifully.

Tarrytown Kitchen

Sep 2015

One interesting feature of this project is the fact the architect who designed and built this house was actually the Dean of Architecture at The University of Texas here in Austin. Each of the rooms we remodeled allowed for no changing of perimeter walls. We were land-locked. Our goal to “create more space” was confined to the walls given. We achieved the larger feel by use of lighter toned materials, consistent use of materials, and use of the thickness of the stairwell wall. We also designed specific cabinets and drawers to accommodate the homeowner's needs, even down to a slide out drawer for the dog's food and water bowel. Getting to know the clients also revealed their love of trees. This is only fitting as the home is nestled into a beautiful setting of trees. For this reason I designed a custom paint detail in the kitchen to subtly tie into their collection of tree art. If you look carefully at the custom art feature in the kitchen you may also find two birds flittering through the trees for a touch of whimsy.

South Austin Kitchen

Jul 2015

This family used their resources to the fullest. Due to the typical cabinet configuration, the home was built with storage lacking. This caused the homeowners to stash many items on top of the counters which had no home inside of a cabinet. This is where smarter cabinetry plays a large role in de-cluttering a kitchen. Through more accessible pantry roll out trays, tall tray storage, full-extension drawers, full-height doors below the sink, and a trash pull-out cabinet we were able to rearrange the same contents into the same amount of space. We did’t bump into any other rooms to achieve the additional storage. We simply planned the cabinetry better based upon the homeowner’s needs. While we found new homes for many items, we also wanted to create interest though varying textures. Some items are meant to be on display. It is still a good idea to personalize a kitchen with certain items. With the inclusion of a couple of open shelves next to the refrigerator, we provided an opportunity to display a few different items. Adding low profile, under cabinet lighting helps to illuminate those items on these open shelves, as well as the task surface below. As one would accessorize an outfit with a tie, cuff links, a scarf, or a necklace, we topped off the design with a couple of colorful pendant light fixtures over the bar.

Steiner Ranch Master Bath

Jun 2015

Once a dark and worn out space, this master bathroom didn’t compliment the rest of the house. A typical corner built-in tub and an outdated shower were high on the propriety list for a make-over. Having a brighter environment to prepare for the day was another item on the homeowner’s wish list. Creating a focal point with the soaker tub drove much of the design. The homeowners didn’t want the typical deck-mounted tub, so they selected a free-standing, air bubbler style tub with an elegant tub filler faucet. The tub sits upon an organic pebble detail which adds to the relaxed lines, removing rigidity lines that are typically in bathrooms, making this one anything but ordinary. Our paint choices helped accentuate the beautiful cathedral ceiling, which makes the space appear larger. Adding sconce lighting at the vanities makes for more flattering task lighting. Only using lighting from above, such as recessed cans, creates dark circles under the eyes. The decorative art piece hanging in the wall niche is a special piece to the homeowners. The artist of the piece is one whom the homeowners have long admired and discovered while traveling. Now the master bath is far more inviting and a great space to relax and soak in a hot bath.
