Madison Valley Refresh

Sep 2017

his Craftsman-style home received a mid-century makeover, blending the styles together to ensure continuity and comfort for its new owners. Reorienting the living room toward the fireplace, finding dog- and cat-friendly furnishings, and new light fixtures gave these rooms a drastically new feel, but one that the owner said “feels like it has always been there.” We worked around a few pieces that the owner loves, including a mid century stereo cabinet and their photography collection. Most importantly, though, the cat and the dog each gave it two “paws up.”

Groovy Palm Springs Rental

May 2016

Designed to be an investment, generating rental income, this home had to be eye-catching and fun. And while a little over the top for a house you would live in, it is a great vacation house. The entire inside received new finishes: floors, walls, kitchen, wet bar and bathrooms. A fresh white coat of paint and pops of color complete the look. Modernous was responsible for minor changes to the floor plan, all finish choices, and all furniture and decor.

Pioneer Square Loft gets New Life

Oct 2015

This Pioneer Square loft was purchased by an East Coast baseball fan with a classic sense of style. It had been on the market for several years, having been last updated in the 90s, in a way that was pretty hard to see past. My client knew it could be something great but needed some help reinventing it. We approached the project in two phases: finishes and furnishings. By removing all of the vestiges of the 90s, we were able to start fresh. Wall-to-wall carpeting was removed, as was hundreds of pounds of sheet metal. The white painted ceilings were sandblasted to bring it back to its beautiful natural wood color, and the massive fireplace—which not only blocked all natural light, but cut up the space significantly–was removed from the center of the room. The dark and cramped kitchen was opened completely. The client was adamant that the stairs had to be completely rebuilt and this feature ended up being the centerpiece of the space.

Bellevue Living Spaces

Oct 2015

This family had an awkwardly shaped living and dining room. Their eat-in kitchen had become the catch all space for the family and the other rooms were unused. While they like the idea of an open plan, they have a fireplace that separates the kitchen and living room, making it unrealistic to open it up. They contacted Modernous to help them create a space that was inviting, comfortable, and that fit their family. By asking about how they hoped to use their room and what activities they enjoy as a family, we were able to create a space that welcomes them to relax and read, and created flexible seating for entertaining. We started by painting the walls white to create a blank canvas and replaced the chandelier in the dining room with something fun and modern. Their living room has large windows looking into a lush yard, so Modernous wanted to pull some of the green from the outside and created a warm conversation area in the living room. With the exception of the two upholstered chairs, chosen for budget reasons, everything is hypo-allergenic and easy-to-clean for their highly-reactive son. The clients say they are using their space a lot more and are very happy with the way it turned out.

Manhattan Modern

Jun 2015

This active New Yorker and her dog put off buying new furniture until she bought her own apartment; she wanted her new furnishings to be purchased to fit the space. So when she finally moved into her Upper West Side co-op, she left most of her Texas-sized furniture behind! Modernous was challenged to create a space that was comfortable, modern and fun, and that could be flexible for her infrequent, but cherished, dinner parties. On a base of Coventry Grey paint by Benjamin Moore, we mixed vintage and repurposed with new pieces to create a warm and modern space. The dining table was a critical find: it collapses to 3’ x 3’ for daily use in the kitchen nook, but can expand to fit 8 people. There is a space in the living room where the table can extend, with additional seating from space-saving folding chairs made for a New Yorker (they fold flat for storage)! Lighting fixtures were updated and the client’s own collectibles were arranged and displayed on the gorgeous vintage wall unit found in Brooklyn. The armadillo was added as an ironic nod to the client’s time in Austin TX.

Voxus PR

Mar 2015

This mid-sized PR firm was looking for two updated common spaces: a more creative and polished place to meet with clients, and a casual space for employees to gather, relax, talk and meet. Modernous created two rooms in their already-cool office space. Highlighting the exposed brick walls and working with their corporate identity and color palette, Modernous furnished and decorated these spaces on a tight budget, including a custom table.

The Aqua Lair

Mar 2012

This remodel of a 1963 mid-century modern home--featured in DWELL Magazine and selected as a 2015 AIA Home of Distinction--ultimately became a total rebuild. Modernous selected all interior finishes (tile, flooring, paint colors), kitchen and bath cabinetry and fixtures, all lighting, furniture and accessories.
