Sadly we agreed to do this job for Mike, who appeared to have lots of work to do, trying to get a discount on the bid for his pergola. The design he wanted was clearly quoted as an Estimate, as we did not have prices for all the expensive hardware he wanted, plus the estimate was for 2 to 2.5 days of labor. This was for a 35 foot pergola, three levels, symmetrical. When we started, he wanted one side longer, so the total length was 41 feet, which of course required more hardware, more materials, and more labor. He wanted this done super quick, and said he was willing to pay more for the longer boards we needed for the project, rather than waiting a few days for the lower priced materials. He was charged ONLY for the actual cost of the materials, with no upcharges, and was charged for 3 days of labor instead of the 3.5 days we actually needed. The "sub-par work" he speaks of was two 2 x 2 top boards that were 3/4 of an inch shorter than the ones next to them, which we could easily have fixed if he asked. Instead, he tried to cheat my workers and myself out of more than $1100 on a fabulous looking pergola that we got compliments on before we were even done. I am posting the pictures of the pergola. Total charges (labor and materials) were $5027.77 for a pergola over 410 square feet.
