On a recent sub-freezing winter afternoon, my husband left home to run errands. When he backed out of the garage and closed the automatic garage door, it came down with a jerky motion and landed unevenly. The door was jammed and wouldn’t budge. Fortunately, the owner-operator of Lake City Overhead Door, Dave McGuire, had left his business card attached to the interior wall of the garage above the opener. It was already dark, but I called Dave and explained the problem. He said he still had TWO MORE service calls that night, but promised he’d be at our home by 7:00. He was concerned that we wouldn’t be able to get a car out of the garage in an emergency, and didn’t want us to wait until the next day. On schedule and undoubtedly tired from a long day, Dave arrived and examined the door to find a broken cable on one of the door guides. (That made sense, since the doors were 26 years old.) He gave us the option of replacing the worn-out rollers at the same time that enable the doors to glide in their tracks. That turned out to be a good suggestion. Dave immediately set up a portable propane heater in our garage to ease the chill of the freezing cold night. He had all the parts with him on the truck. After about 2 hours, Dave had both doors repaired, properly adjusted, lubricated, and working like new. If there’s a homeowner lesson to be had from this: Don’t neglect routine garage door maintenance! Our 26-year-old doors should have had a n inspection for worn-out parts and a tune-up every few years. For any garage door work, we highly recommend Dave McGuire and Lake City Overhead Door. Despite the miserable snowy night, he arrived on-time and worked into the night to insure our safety. Dave was honest in his assessment and made logical, efficient suggestions about changing out other parts that were likely near failure. His repair work was perfect and his fees reasonable. In this day and age, there are far too many “fly-by-night” companies, but Dave really knows his business and takes good care of his customers.
