Cody and Michelle began their journey as a young married couple with a dream, one in which had all to do with being successful in life, not only financially but successful as a family. The qualities required for a successful family are the same qualities we at Big Tex Renovations were founded on; honesty and integrity. These two qualities are what drive the passion we have for the renovation field. With over 14 years experience of interior and exterior renovations, Big Tex has the ability to design and build all your home renovation dreams. Big Tex Renovations has been in business since 2007. Owner Cody Abner has been building and renovating homes since 1998 when he first built his families log home in Minnesota. He then moved to Texas in 2006 and has been making a name for himself since. Cody and his crew take pride in every project they put their hands to, big or small. Our goal is that you start as a client and end up becoming part of the Big Tex Renovations family.

Big Tex Renovations was highly recommended by a friend that raved about them, after their home remodel. I called Cody the owner, about painting our house, and was pleased with his rapid friendly response and communication throughout the job. If I had a question or concern he would quickly respond, show up, and take care of it immediately. Cody would walk around the house with us and check the work after each stage of the project. Big Tex crews were friendly, and did quality work. I had a problem with our garage door scraping the new paint and he adjusted my garage door on the spot. I highly recommend Big Tex.

We originally contacted this company to have a home renovation bid. We chose the company, and right from the start problems ensued. It should be known that this contractor was fired prior to completion of the job due to unprofessional tactics, and inability to consistently complete work in a sufficient and timely manner. The contractor was very poor, to say the least, at contacting us back about important decisions along the way. Mr. Abner would repeatedly ask the same question multiple times instead of documenting it the first time he was told. The contractor used sub-contractors for much of the job, all of whom were unprofessional. The subs would leave trash around our home, damaged furniture and new cabinets, never showed promptly, or not show at all, complete shoddy work, or have to come back multiple times to fix mistakes. The owner of Big Tex made threats to walk away from the job no less than 3 separate times when questioned about aspects of the job. After we chose to do much of the demolition ourselves due to extremely high pricing (40-50% above other contractors prices) we were constantly harassed about said demolition. At one point of the process after we elected to complete small electric tasks (can light install in kitchen) the contractor contacted my spouse to state there was a problem with the homeowner completed electric work, but when contractor was confronted about the so-called "sparks" he was seeing, he refused to state what problem he actually noticed. After several attempts to gain information from the contractor about these false statements, he threatened to quit. The confrontation was recorded with the contractor due to him consistently being vague about the truth, or flat out falsifying statements. Texas is not a required consent state when it comes to recording individuals without them knowing, so I implore anyone reading this to record all conversations, and to document all communication via email, or text as the contractor doesn't "remember" things, or makes them up as he goes. The contractor consistently displayed an inexperienced and unprofessional attitude throughout the process. The contractor liked to "spin" a certain topic when he was questioned about inferior work. This company also hires staff that are less than qualified to handle such work, and the owner admitted multiple times throughout the process that he is essentially hiring cheap labor so they (employees) are not going to be a competitor in the future. The contractor gets very anxious when questioned about processes with work, and displays a threatened/challenged attitude when homeowners become too involved in the process. Contractor states often that "he is not here to hold hands". Design decisions were never made by the contractor as he does not have experience with designing or creating "flow" in a home. Pricing with this contractor varies depending on his mood. Near the end of the process Big Tex would send updated invoices that would have bizarre charges that were never discussed, and they always appeared after the contractor was confronted about something. After speaking with owners of the sub-contracting companies, we found that the contractor was overcharging on multiple occasions throughout the process. This contractor had to have much of the home remodel taken from him because of pricing, or inability to complete efficiently, or due to lack of experience. After things were removed, the contractor would make comments about liability, and/or treat the customer with disrespect. This contractor is also threatened by other contractors. We routinely had other contractors from the area consult with us about an aspect of the job, getting another bid, or asking advice, and the contractors second in charge would relay the information immediately as if to show fear. This contractor is incapable of letting second in charge make any decisions, and work moves very slowly because of this. The employee was contacted no less than 20 times a day when the contractor was not on the job site, which was 75% of time. During our initial interview stage we were explicit about having the tile completed ONLY by the contractor due to an employee screwing up the expensive tile. Once the time came to do tile work, the contractor was not present at the job site, and other employees that were not qualified to do the work routinely completed the work. The tile work was completed incorrectly, and is still a problem currently in our utility room. The contractor had too many other jobs going at the time of our major renovation, and during the process there were many days when no one would show up to complete the next stage of work. If you are not able to constantly stay on top of this contractor, please steer clear if not for all the other problems that we incurred. Lastly, the point of writing this review is to allow the consumer to make a better decision when dealing with this contractor. His work will almost certainly cost much more than the estimate, and I implore you as the consumer to look at other options.
