Williams & Son Masonry

I contracted with Williams and Son Masonry, LLC for a chimney repair at my house. The work involved an old chimney that had been previously plastered/stuccoed, and the plaster was cracked and coming off in several areas and had exposed bricks. The contract specified several items, including "plaster chimney where needed", and seal entire chimney with a waterproof coating. The repair efforts did not address several areas of cracked and bulging plaster that remained after their repair efforts, and the new plaster that was applied had several cracks and was sagging. The chimney was not thoroughly cleaned of algae, etc., and an old paint coating and other debris prior to applying the plaster, and the coating intended to provide a waterproof barrier. The product instructions specified cleaning the surface first and do not apply over paint; however, the product was applied directly over an improperly prepared and painted surface, resulting in many cracks, holes, and voids on the chimney surface and paint in the outer coating. In addition, 2 coats are required and they only applied one coat. The work was not performed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions for the products used or industry standards. They charged nearly $4,000 for a poorly done patch job, where they spent approximately 3 hours of work (I later got an estimate for $4200 to completely rebuild the chimney). I had used the company before and that work was satisfactory; however, this work was poorly done and did not meet minimum standards promulgated by the Ohio Home Builders Association (OHBA), pursuant to Ohio revised Code § 4722.01(G). The OHBA is designated as the authority to adopt Minimum Quantifiable Standards that define Workmanlike Manner.
