Painting: A 90 year Family Tradition Providing painting and decorating services has been a tradition for the Barthelmass family since 1923 John Barthelmass worked as a superintendent for the Lemp Brewery. The 18th Amendment brought about prohibition, and led to the closing of the brewery. John Barthelmass, who had settled in Kirkwood, set out on his own, starting the Barthelmass Painting Company. In time, following a stint in the Army serving in Britain during World War II, Howard D. Barthelmass joined his father in business. John Barthelmass passed away. Howard D. Barthelmass continued to paint local homes and businesses. In the early 1970s, Howard G. "Skip" Barthelmass became the 3rd generation to join the family business. Skip joined the family business after he himself served in the US Army. Howard's other son, John L. Barthelmass, also worked with the company for a time. In time, the company grew to include offices in Columbia and Indiana. In 1982, Howard D. Barthelmass passed away. Skip refocused the family's efforts, concentrating on providing painting services here locally. Along the way, Skip taught all of his kids how to paint. Skip became known not only for his company's work, but also for his volunteer spirit in the community. He was active in many business and civic organizations. Skip passed away suddenly on August 13th, 2007, after he had gone out in the middle of the night to help clear storm debris. It was a tragic blow not only to the Barthelmass family, but also to the family business. Scott Barthelmass, who had been active in public safety since the early 1990s, had hoped to join the family business after he had earned his retirement as a police officer. His father's death, however, changed his plans. In 2008, Scott began offering painting and decorating services through the Scott Barthelmass Painting Company. Today, 6 years later, Scott is the 4rth generation of the Barthelmass family to provide painting and decorating services locally. Scott, and his crew, complete about 60 painting projects a year. The company has completed numerous residential, commercial and institutional projects. "I am proud of the fact that our family has been involved in providing painting and decorating services here locally for over 90 years," said Scott Barthelmass. "I strive to provide our customers - past, present and future - with quality workmanship at a fair price," continued Barthelmass. Scott is proud to carry on his family's legacy. Additionally, Scott is just active in the community as his father. Something he is equally as proud of.
