The 350 room Langham Hotel occupies the lowest third of the office tower and represents a complete interior redesign from office building to hotel functions. I was asked by the Langham Hotel ownership if I would design the street level lobby entrance because it needed a high level of sensitivity to integrate the new function with the Mies van der Rohe designed landmark building. In the late 60’s as a young architect, I worked with my grandfather, Mies van der Rohe, on this office building and became very familiar with the Miesian architectural aesthetic. The repurposing from office function to hotel on the floors above the lobby is not visible to the outside of the building and did not necessitate any change to the exterior skin. However, the entry to the ground floor lobby of the hotel is very visible and needed to be noticeable from the street and set itself apart from the office building lobby. The challenge was to design a lobby space that would clearly express the welcoming ambience of a hotel but also would be a sympathetic neighbor to the office lobby as designed by Mies van der Rohe. The conceptual solution was to continue the spatial continuity of the preexisting ground floor while at the same time creating a welcoming warmth characteristic of a fine hotel.
