Renovation 101

My brother is a commercial fisherman and is gone 8 months out of the year. He closed on a house 4 days before leaving again for an extended period, asking me to find the right contractor to renovate his new home. I know nothing about remodeling a home, so felt extremely overwhelmed being left with such a task...I've heard so many horror stories about hiring a contractor and not getting the desired end result or that it ended up costing way more than anticipated.
