Butler Lighting

Sep 2014

Lighting fixtures too can be incorporated into an eco-friendly landscape design. The fixtures used on this Madison property are LED and made in the USA, which means they are energy efficient and locally sourced. They have dimmers and timers for flexible lighting with the ability to shut down. The posts and railings are made of repurposed cypress siding and were specifically designed to draw on the homes unique architecture, while the post/rail lights add a warm ambiance and illuminate the steps for improved safety. Tree downlights are fixed to mature oak trees using canvas straps that can be adjusted to reduce negative impacts to the trees as they grow. Underground electric lines are routed around tree roots and through areas with less erosive potential. Local boulders, native plants, and biodegradable erosion blankets were then added to serve as a means to stabilize impacts to fragile, natural landscapes. Care and quality craftsmanship ensure impacts to existing natural hardscape features are repaired to maintain their original character for years to come.

Larson Residence

Aug 2014

Having just moved from a home on Madisons west side these clients were accustomed to a smaller, and more organized outdoor space, but now living in Verona on a larger & much more open property, they found they were in need of a different type of landscape. They wanted a setting that still focused on beauty & formality, but was also based in hardy plant selections with looser forms that could connect/relate to the larger natural surroundings. To accommodate, native perennials in combination with a few non-native, but non-invasive species, were selected to provide a bold & striking expression, while affording durability & lower maintenance. Strategically placed native shade trees connect and nestle this three story home to the greater landscape without obstructing views from inside. Boulders and rock gardens create permanent textural interest and in combination with perennial fall color, will provide needed multi-seasonal enjoyment.

Dickinson Residence

These Albany clients reside in their dream home, but feel misplaced in the multi-acre landscape. To help, Formecology incorporated a native tree & shrub border to give prominence and definition to the boundless front yard and a colorful prairie planting to maintain connectedness to the greater landscape. A water feature within the space is thoughtfully placed to take advantage of views from within the home and the front porch. Local natural stones edge planting beds, boulders & personal artifacts from distant travels compliment the ornamental pond, and native perennials attract the sought after wildlife habitat, which meet all of our clients goals for their front yard area.

Abshere Residence

Aug 2012

Innovation and creativity were critical in addressing flooding issues at this residential homesite. Along with remediating stormwater issues, the clients also wanted to enhance their outdoor living space, preserve an existing redbud tree, and redesign their failing driveway, which also contributed to the water issues onsite. A comprehensive and thoughtful plan was developed to address all of the goals holistically. This led to the construction of a split tread, eco-driveway, a patio space created from repurposed clay pavers, and several rain gardens to manage stormwater. Stormwater from the rooftop, patio and driveway is effectively and beautifully managed onsite away from the home and foundation.

Weebleworld Child Care Center

Jul 2011

Introducing children to natural elements was most important for the owners of this new child care center in Stoughton, WI. Through the thoughtfully designed elements of this landscape, kids can see with their own eyes answers to questions like where does all the rain go after a storm? and where do carrots come from? A rain garden helps manage roof top run off, while providing a home for beautiful native wildflowers, and raised veggie gardens, made from repurposed lumber, will provide hours of educational entertainment for children of various ages. In addition to basic play equipment, this landscape was designed to provide children with a deeper, more meaningful outdoor experience. Fences to keep the children safe were thoughtfully designed to allow separate play areas while maintaining a beautiful flow throughout the landscape. Large native shrubs and oak trees help to soften the views. Overall the landscape design coupled with the owners vision provides a unique space for children ready to engage nature.
