Historic Farm Estate

Nov 2012

This estate, tucked away at the top of the hill, was so picturesque that I didn't think to take pictures of anything but the scenery. The original farmhouse was built before the American Revolution, and an addition (larger than the original section) was built circa 1830. Two coats of paint on the trim, two coats of solid stain on the clapboard, accent colors for the front door -- all of that was pretty straightforward. Some nice touches included painting the exterior lights to match the accent color, cutting custom decals of the ranch's brand for their mailbox, repairing carpenter bee damage, and working on the many outbuildings on this estate. My favorite part of this job, of course, were the WINDOWS - over 3 dozen of them (I lost count!). They were all reglazed, many panes of glass were replaced, sometimes cutting the odd sizes from larger piece of antique glass in storage. I set up a shop in one of the garages to keep production going rain or shine. Each window also had a wooden storm, and a wooden screen to go with it. No, that's not really true. . . my FAVORITE part of this job was the environs -- friendly people, our client was a sweet person and a real character, a half a dozen half-wild dogs roaming around, a calf was born, folks who leased plots would share their eggs and their stories. I hope something else needs painting soon.

North Stonington Farm Estate

Jun 2012

Changed the color of the trim on this sprawling North Stonington equestrian estate, tucked into the nearby vinyards. The product was solid acrylic stain, and the challenges included taming bees, hard-to-reach areas, and the necessity of cutting bright green stain next to bare-cedar siding without any drips or slips over the entire 10,000+ sqft home. Working with familiar clients, and with an hourly price, it was easy to include some nice extras such as painting the bulkhead, as well as some metal lawn furniture in a lovely oil-based enamel by Benjamin Moore

Midtown Manhattan Converted Industrial Flat

Feb 2012

This project was an extensive remodel for a high-powered client (whose name I would love to drop, but won't) with very specific tastes. As doing any actual construction might have violated the building association's agreement, we did an extensive skim-coat to this 15,000+ sqft ceiling, building dust-containing plastic cells as we went, and removing a lot of damaged plaster before stabilizing it with heavy-duty oil primer. We did some magic tricks on this job, making a massive heating unit, some unsightly closets, and a flimsy interior wall disappear without a trace. What wall? My favorite part of this job by far was painting the metal steam pipes, window casings, and other fixtures. Our client started honing in on a distressed look for the metal. The steam pipes were all scraped and stripped of years worth of nasty off-white latex paint, making them both partially shiny, and more efficient. The radiators were treated with a wire brush to remove some loose paint, and expose the several colors each had been painted. Huge industrial windows with metal casings were given a similar treatment. Finally, the electrical boxes (meter, circuit breaker etc) were sanded, leaving paint in all of the grooves. The Coup De Gras was the layering of clear lacquer with increasing amounts of black pigment in it, to seal the distressed metal exactly as it was in perpetuity, making sure it achieved a more-or-less uniform look of industrial dinginess. (This final application was done by one of my absolute favorite subs, Tim) The result thrilled our client, and I only wish I had taken more pictures.

MangeTout Organice Cafe

Nov 2011

Gave a stylish face-lift to this business on a busy downtown street, with a sharp, three-color paint job. It needed scraping, sanding, and two coats of paint, (notice the red, white, and blue feathered layers of paint from the prep detail). I took colors, at the proprietor's suggestion, from the art mural inside the building, and because they were too deep for my paint suppliers to computer-colormatch, I custom-mixed them myself. (The ultra-deep colors took forever to cure, but looked fantastic.) We cleaned the mold and stains from the awning, and also polished and lacquered the brass on the front door to a brilliant shine. Later on, repaired the water-damaged and rotted window casings on the side of the building with epoxy, and painted them as well.
