Provincetown House | Jan 2007 | The historic 6,000 square-foot home dates back from the 1870s is located in the West End of Provincetown. The original structure had seen prior modifications over the years and had grown by accretion across a wide site, which includes two large volumes and three lesser volumes situated between the street and Provincetown Harbor. The reconstruction of the main volume, with its historic facade facing the street is clad in painted clapboard with double hung cape windows and the existing secondary volumes were re-clad with white cedar shingles. The new sections of the structure facing the sea, are clad in mahogany and plate glass with a low pitched cooper roof. The distribution, scale and character of the interior rooms correspond to the architectural tone, fenestration, and structure of the external volumes. The smaller, more private rooms occupy the historic footprint and wood construction of the earlier structures, while the large open spaces of the living room and balcony of the new addition are provided uninterrupted views of the sea, afforded by steel framing and hurricane resistant glass. | $2m | Provincetown, MA
A.B. Biagi Gelato & Coffee Shop | May 2013 | A.B. Biagi Gelato & Coffee shop brings the craft of traditional Italian gelato making with a taste of Brazil to the heart of New York City's Nolita neighborhood. The 375 square-foot narrow storefront was a gut renovation that required a new design layout to accommodate a commercial kitchen as well as infrastructure, plumbing, and electrical updates and additions. Designed to evoke the warmth and comfort of a home kitchen, the space is a homage to Biagi’s life in Sao Paolo. The exterior features a brightly colored yellow façade, reminiscent of Brazil’s national colors, that greet guests as they walk into the light filled, cozy shop. Interior features include the space’s original concrete floors, crisp white tiled walls with oak accents and expansive open shelving. AB Biagi’s gelato is spun before customers’ eyes in a traditional vertical batch freezer, the Cavttabriga EFFE, that sits on a white marble table with built in shelving and plenty of cold storage space. Made with farm fresh milk from upstate New York, organic sugar from his family’s mills in Brazil and exotic fruits like bergamot and açaí, nuts, chocolate, herbs and spices making A.B. Biagi's eponymous shop an evocative destination. | New York, NY
Greenwich Village Townhouse | Jan 2012 | This townhouse renovation in New York City’s Greenwich Village updates a twelve-foot wide home for a repeat client. The scope of work spans all four floors, but focuses heavily on the house’s dated garden level. The entire level was gutted and a new kitchen, dining room, and powder room were designed to respond to the client’s eclectic style and fit the needs of a growing family. The kitchen sits at the front entry of the house and employs a mix of walnut cabinetry, antique mirror finishes, a black and white checkered marble floor and commanding red appliances. At the rear, a dining room is carved out that opens to the back yard. The space in between discretely houses a powder room, laundry and much needed storage closets. Throughout the house, mechanical and electrical upgrades were made to accommodate modern demands. The project was a collaboration with decorator Richard McGeehan, with whom J/GA has worked with on several private residences. | New York, NY
Marc Jacobs Showroom & Offices | Jan 2009 | This 10,000 square-foot showroom and office space is housed within a full floor of Marc Jacob's Manhattan headquarters. The program called for a showroom and storage areas, corporate office space for 50+ employees, and adjoining executive offices. This varied program was best achieved with a layered design scheme that transitions from public to private areas. The entry features an elongated reception area that serves as the main artery to the surrounding programs. From the reception area the main showroom is accessed through a glass and steel sliding door. The grand showroom space is wrapped in display fixtures that boasts custom sycamore millwork and mirrored closets along the walls. Work spaces are positioned at the center of the showroom and features custom glass and steel sliding doors to create a flexible program and add a level of privacy when needed. Tucked behind the reception desk are 4,500 square-feet of corporate office space. The minimal design uses wood and steel workspaces that can be easily reconfigured to accommodate changing needs. An executive office, located in the building's north-west corner is connected to an adjacent executive office one floor above with a newly constructed staircase. | New York, NY
SoHo Loft | Jan 2008 | The project is a 2,000 square foot apartment located in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. The existing plan presented a large floor plate with windows along the east-facing wall and segmented private spaces to the west. The new design reconciles the client’s desire to have open space with the need for privacy and the utilization of natural light. The single large living space was divided into separate “his and hers” seating areas with open access to new kitchen and dining areas. A library was added off of the main living area, framed by two custom-fabricated steel and reed glass pocket doors. The intimate space sits in contrast to large living areas and can be closed off for needed privacy. Walnut shelving wraps the back wall of the space, with a custom-designed daybed tucked to the left of the entry providing extra seating and storage. The master bedroom is contained by a wall of blackened steel and antique mirror of the same design, with a large sliding glass and steel door separating the room from the main living space. The design maximizes the natural light from the east-facing windows. To create the impression of an inviting and light-filled master bath, the design balances silver travertine surfaces with cherry wood details. | New York, NY |
