These clients have a large family with several young children and extended family that lives close by. They love to have large family gatherings and needed a more functional space to do so. They already had a large kitchen and family room, but the two rooms were very separate, which did not work well when they were entertaining. The clients home also had a beautiful water view blocked by a brick wall and an old, outdated sunroom. The ultimate goal was to create an open living, working and entertaining space with a great view. We planned to achieve this by opening the wall between the family room and kitchen, as well as adding two large picture windows on either side of the new cooktop location. While the cooktop wall, tiled in a beautiful glass and stone mosaic, is an eye catcher it is truly the 15 x 4 island that takes center stage in the room. The exotic granite top was created by two slabs installed mirror image to each other. The island has room to seat the family or set up a buffet to feed an entire party. We did not add any space to this home, but it feels twice the size!

Our clients knew they were taking on a large project when they purchased this home, but we all could not be more pleased with the transformation. Years ago, these clients purchased this small home from an architect with the intent of using it for a fishing cottage and weekend retreat. The architect shared with him his ideas for adding on to this almost 150 year old home, but at the time they need it for nothing more than it was-a fishing shack with a beautiful water view. Over the years, they spent many weekends with their family enjoying their beautiful spot in the country. As their children grew older and had children of their own, they started to think about the architects ideas again. They came to use with a few loose concepts of what they wanted to do, but unsure of exactly what they wanted to create. We spent months honing the plans for the space keeping many primary concerns in mind. First, they wanted to keep the unique, historic charm of their cottage. Secondly, they wanted to design a home that involved no more than square footage than what they needed. This eventually evolved into the final design-slightly modifying the original cottage and adding a smaller guest cottage connected by a breezeway. Every room was designed to contain just enough space for its function-this allowed us to keep the cottage within a reasonable scale and did not take away from the view or overpower the environment around the building. We kept many of the original features of the main cottage-such as painted hardwood floors, the bunk space above the living room and the original mantel (including the authentically distressed finish). The century old floors, tongue and grove, unique nooks and hand crafted touches will remain a part of this cottage for years to come. Along with any home this age, came many challenges but we feel the final product was worth almost a year of planning and building. This home will be a part of this family for hopefully many generations and we are proud to have been a part of history!

Almost thirty years ago our company put a closet addition on to this families homethirty years later they are living in a new home but had the same need. The 50 year hold did not offer adequate closet storage for the ever growing shoe and clothing collections. After several discussions about the clients needs, the plans were developed to update the entire master suite. After all of these years, they still really loved the master suite we created thirty years ago and wanted something very similar-but on a larger scale. The couple own a beautiful, traditional home on the water with a very classic design scheme. Much like in the original additional, they wanted to carry the timeless feel into the bathroom. We used beautiful white, raised panel cabinets topped with a traditional carrera with a twistit was a maintaince free quartz top. This option was a pleasant update from the bath remodel almost thirty years ago-the top would now be easy to care for and did pose the risk of stains and scratches. In the foyer and kitchen of the home, they have a very rustic slate tile, so we continued this look into the master floor and shower using another maintaince free product-porcelain tile. Again, the clients were pleased with the products that were now available with a stunning, natural look but very little care required. The closet was much larger than the first additional we built, after all there were thirty more years of shoes to store! We spent a lot of time determining how many hangers needed to fit in the new space, how much space would be needed for folded clothes and of course-how many shelves would be needed for shoes. A lot of thought went into this space, which paid off in the end. The homeowner was able to empty all six other closets in the home and consolidate into one! It is always a compliment when a client returns, so it was special to have almost the same team working on this addition as the first go-round thirty years ago!!
