We have a rectangular stairwell and there is a pony wall on the switchback past the half flight up the stairs, plus a pony wall in the upstairs hallway as you look down into the stairwell. There is a wooden stairrail on one side of the lower half flight which is sidemounted as the width of the stairs is 36 inches. we are seeking to demo the pony walls and to install metal cable or similar metal railings, but we would consider wood as well (depending on costs). We think the right metal railing kit might alleviate the need for any reframing and related costs. Pics available on request..
