Kodiak Tile & Stone

WARNING: Nowhere, that we have found, on Kodiak’s website does it mention their work is guaranteed, that they offer a Warranty or that they stand by their work. WHY? Because they don’t! We hired Kodiak Dustless aka Kodiak Tile & Stone (Kodiak) in January, although their bid was highest, because they were recommended by the company where we purchased our Vinyl flooring and because their reviews seemed to indicate they did outstanding, high quality work and they had no complaints against them with the Registrar of Contractors (ROC). The job required removal of tile, carpet and laminate then install new Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring. Our first issue was payment. They demanded payment in full, prior to the job being completed and peppered us with bullying text messages. They insisted at their high install rate of $3.75/sf it did not include the two room transitions. WOW! When finally done it looked beautiful, but then the problems started. There was an area where the floor is uneven and another where some unknown substance was coming up between the planks and yet another area where there are chips out of the planks. The owner, Colyn MacDonald, became defensive and a raging jerk. He refused to fix any of our issues so we filed a complaint with the ROC, that complaint was not specific enough so the ROC requested we refile, which we have done and is pending. We have hired a National Institute of Certified Floorcovering Inspectors (NICFI) certified independent inspector to look at the floors and he provided his findings, substantiating our issues. Colyn MacDonald still refused to admit the work they did had any issues and told us we wasted our money hiring the inspector. In fact, Colyn MacDonald then immediately retaliated against us by issuing an invoice for $1,700.00 in fraudulent charges and is threatening to file a lien on our property if we do not pay it. Unfortunately, we had another issue at our home which caused us to take up some of the flooring Kodiak had installed. That was a blessing in disguise because it uncovered the subfloor and showed it was not properly prepared for the flooring installation. The concrete subfloor is riddled with depressions (see photos) that the flooring manufacturer mandated be filled/feathered even with the subfloor. Colyn MacDonald saw it and still refuses to admit the work they did has issues; he insists it is compliant with manufacturer standards. Through all of this complaint process, it was discovered that Colyn MacDonald had over-charged us for the work by over-stating the square feet. We demanded reimbursement, but now he suddenly claims the work was not billed by the foot, but by the number of days and staff. They also over-charged us for demo they ended up not doing of our laminate. We have filed a Better Business Bureau (BBB) and AG complaint against Kodiak for these charges. This company is overpriced and performs poor quality workmanship that looks nice. The business owners have proven to us to behave in a reprehensible, vindictive manner and do not, in any way, stand by the work they do. We will update this review as we proceed against them.
