Close attention to detail was essential to achieve functionality and aesthetics in this city side yard. The overrun, unused space was replaced with a functional outdoor room that provides privacy with tall marble and timber screens, sliding feature gates to hide garage access, a custom timber bench seat and a floating built in BBQ. The large format Bluestone paving provides the feeling of space, while a carefully selected plant pallet softens the yard. This space is ideal for entertaining or just to relax and enjoy the privacy.

Both function and practicality have been blended here on this tight access rear yard. The existing deck here created some privacy issues. Tall timber screens block out neighbouring houses, while a prominent rendered wall creates a visual feature that is enjoyed from numerous points of the house. Raised garden beds allow the greenery to soften an otherwise harsh material pallet.

This private pool area is great for the kids. With high timber screens, Bamboo and Magnolias you forget the neighbors exist. A Stainless Steel water chute provides a pool feature and breaks up the polished concrete slab area. The undercover alfresco area has a fully equipped Electrolux outdoor BBQ kitchen with Vintec glass front fridge, all within sight of the pool area.

Tucked away in the heart of Port Melbourne, is this entertainers getaway. Maximising space while still providing a highly functional outdoor room was the goal in this compact courtyard. This courtyard has an abundance of seating room, privacy screens, feature walls, BBQ area and a built in sun lounge. With well planned garden lighting, this courtyard can be enjoyed both as an entertaining area or as a visual feature from inside the house in the cooler months.

This rear yard was designed by COS Design with pool construction by Serenity Pools. The large Stringy Bark deck is the same height as the internal floor which leads to the built in BBQ and wood fired pizza oven, while providing ample room for entertaining it maintains a constant flow effect. The glass pool fence by Frameless Impressions offers safety while remaining non obtrusive to the area. The raised pool and spa provide not only functionality but add a visual feature throughout the landscape. The great use of raw materials and exposed steel adds great character and depth to the project.

Tyson Owen travelled to the UK for the Chelsea International Flower and Garden Show as a member of the 2011 team. The Trailfinders Australian Garden, presented by Flemings nurseries was designed by Ian Barker. The garden reflects on the journey of the HMB Endeavour and its discoveries headed by botanist Sir Joseph Banks and Captain James Cook between 1768–1771. The completion of the garden is the culmination of nearly 12 months of work for the team and was awarded a prestigious SILVER-GILT MEDAL.
