W Walberg Residence | Jun 2013 | 306 West Waldburg, located in the Victorian district of Savannah, GA, redefines the concept of modern and sustainable housing in an historic environment. Conceptualized and developed by Trident Sustainability Group (TSG), in cooperation with architect Paul Mckeever | AIA, LEED AP and contractor R. Peacock Construction, this 2000 square foot home transforms a vacant lot into a multi-use space that elegantly manages the demands of a young family of four, showcases the knowledge of a renowned expert in sustainability, and illustrates how high-performance building practices complement the design restrictions of a national historic district. For Tommy Linstroth, founder of Trident Sustainability, this project epitomizes his vision of what urban transformation is all about: A small, in-fill project, using low-impact development practices, attaining a Platinum LEED-H certification, (Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design), boasting considerable energy and water reduction strategies, and built within the budget constraints of a young, professional couple. The project, noted Linstroth, blends an historic sensibility with an eye toward what our urban centers need to look like in the coming decades. For the design of 306 West Waldburg, we studied the lessons provided by three centuries of building practices in this historic city, learned from the ways homes have been designed to fit its distinctive climate and created a new project that is emblematic of how sustainability will be at the forefront of reinvigorating the American city. The project, with its minimalist lines, innovative materials selection, and cutting-edge technologies, is also the Linstroth family's starter home. A main focus of Trident Sustainability Group's design for the residence was to be cost effective and deliver a project for around $150.00 per sf. The point, as Linstroth notes, was to demonstrate that vision and pragmatism can coexist: We wanted to prove that sustainable living does not have to come with a high price tag, and can be affordable for everybody. The interior organization of 306 West Waldburg features an open layout design on the first floor, integrating office, kitchen, living, and dining areas, a spacious adjacent deck and outdoor area for leisure, entertainment, and an edible garden to complement the family's evening meals together. The second floor features three bedrooms and two baths. The adjoining garage space has been designed to include a small home fitness studio. With the delivery of this project Trident Sustainability Group has delivered a design, which is truly innovative, environmentally responsible, contributes to the community, and demonstrates how past and future strategies for living can harmoniously coincide. | Savannah, GA |
