Ballard Aperture | Sep 2013 | Modern urban homes are a push against the increasing complexity of urban life. We depend on our homes to balance our life against the outside world. When we arrive home, we need a filter - a place that welcomes us while holding at bay the chaos of the world behind us. From inside, our view becomes sharpened because we have respite from the magnitude of its influence. In every respect, these two homes embody the contemporary spirit of shelter. Space efficiency and material science have propelled our quest for a lighter footprint, and every detail has been crafted for the sole purpose of perfectly serving those inside. Available for sale in early 2013, we are thrilled to announce the commencement of the Ballard Aperture Townhomes. Badger Mountain House | Sep 2012 | Set on the foot of Badger Mountain in Richland Washington, this house draws its design influence from both the natural landscape and the clean lines of traditional Japanese architecture. While the project's primary goal is to answer the growing family's need for additional space, efforts to capture the sweeping views of the Columbia River and connect to the surrounding landscape give this home its shape and orientation. The major spaces are aligned in a simple plan that is arranged perpendicular to the slope of the hillside, minimizing site impact and maximizing views to the north. The south-facing side of the home opens to an outdoor pool and observation area that offers views of the peak of Badger Mountain. 5000 sf 6 Bed - 4 1/2 Bath | Richland, WA
Lever Homes | Feb 2010 | "Give me a place to stand and I shall move the Earth with a lever." - Archimedes This 5-Star Built-Green project is a three story, two-unit townhome sited on a vacant lot near the corner of 26th Ave S. and S. Judkins Street in Seattle. Due to the slender proportion of the lot, the units are arranged in a front-to-back configuration relative to the street. The street-facing, 1bedroom unit is 840sf and the east-facing, 3 bedroom unit is 1440sf. Some key features are ductless mini-split heating and Air Conditioning, tankless hot water, LED Lighting throughout, strand woven bamboo, Formaldehyde free BIBS insulation, high efficiency windows and many non-VOC paints and finishes. First Lamp acted as both designer and builder on this project. | Seattle, WA
Orchid Studio | Jan 2010 | The Orchid Studio is a detached space for a couple needing a place for art and gardening. The studio was designed in the rear yard of the couples main residence in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. The success of this project hinged through the close collaboration between First Lamp and the client. The client is an avid collector of vintage 50's modern furniture and wanted their studio to reflect that passion. Natural light and a flexible space for gardening, painting and guest quarters played a large roll in how functionally the space needed to respond to the program. | Seattle, WA
The Underground | Jun 2008 | The space lies in the basement of a three story residential condominium building in Queen Anne. This 670sf "Loft Style" condo is nestled almost entirely below grade making natural light and views impossible from the outset. Therefore, the primary goal of the design was to create a comfortable urban retreat that is isolated completely from the surrounding environment. | Seattle, WA |
