Wake Forest Porches

May 2019

This repeat client (we love working for her!) called us again to do some work on her porches--the front porch was an accident waiting to happen with loose railings and posts, and the back porch's screens were in generally quite poor shape. We completely removed the front railings around the porch and stairs and replaced them with a composite vinyl railing system that will probably outlast the house--we did have to set two posts in the middle of the stairs to bring everything up to code, but we think the final product was definitely worth it. We also replaced all of the posts on the front porch and sleeved them in vinyl as well as installing heavy-duty post brackets at the bottom to ensure the posts won't rot again. On the back, we completely removed the screen and lathing and re-screened the entire porch with a vinyl system that won't rot or warp over time. It was pretty tedious but the final product speaks for itself. We also built a custom platform off the deck to replace the stair that was literally hanging on by one nail and the bricks that had been uprooted by, well, a root. This platform is much sturdier and safer, and it will last much longer than the previous access solution!

Wake Forest Deck Expansion

Feb 2019

This client's deck was too small for his liking, so we expanded it another 7' for him as well as upgrading the deck railings. We framed the deck according to code, ensuring that it was square, level, plumb, and every other measurement a good deck should conform to before sinking a 6x6 post and setting it in quite a bit of concrete--to say the least, the deck isn't going anywhere anytime soon. After the initial framing, progress was smooth--take off the old, put on the new, staggering and randomizing the seams for a custom look that's sure to please. We finished off by screwing the whole thing down (no nails popping up here!), sanding down rough spots (including the hand rails to mitigate splinters and make it beautiful), and cleaning it all up so the only evidence of our having been there is the longer deck, not a mess.

Wake Forest Custom Mantel

Feb 2019

This client in Hasentree had a problem--a gorgeous home with a pretty lame fireplace mantel. The builders wanted an exorbitant price, so he went with the base option and called us in. We ripped out the old mantel (which was basically a particle-board kit made of 5 or 6 pieces) and build this custom one in its place. A 13-inch shelf supports the weight of a very large television so that the client can actually use his living area to, well, live in, instead of blocking off the old mantel, which was quite an eyesore. For finishing touches, we surrounded the fireplace with AirStone, cutting and placing each piece one at a time for a truly one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Wake Forest Deck Staining

Jan 2019

This client's gorgeous deck was a little lacklustre, so he called us in to spruce it up with a beautiful transparent oil stain. The intricate spindle work was a bit tricky, but this outdoor space turned out very nicely.

Raleigh Deck Revitalization

Jan 2019

We retopped this deck, but only after adding on a new set of stairs to match the stairs already on the deck's other side. We rebuilt the old stairs' gate and built, from scratch, the new stairs' gate--both gates matching, of course. Did we mention that in order to retop the deck, we had to replace almost half the joists and strengthen the widest section of the deck by sinking posts in concrete and tying the joists to them as well as to each other? After all that hard work, we gave the railings a nice new coat of paint, stained the premium lattice, and we'll be going back soon to stain the top of the deck to match the lattice now that it's dried out.

Wake Forest Screen Porch

Jan 2019

This porch, while beautiful, wasn't very useful thanks to North Carolina's lovely insects. The homeowners wanted to be able to use their deck, so we worked with them to find a screen system as beautiful as the deck itself with a storm door to match it. Bugs aren't getting in there any time soon!

Durham Ceiling Rebuild

Sep 2018

This house, first built in the 1920s, had three layers of ceiling: fiber tiles, plaster, and wood. We removed the first two layers of ceiling and reinforced the joists with lathing in order to support the weight of the beadboard ceiling. Every piece of beadboard had to be installed, one at a time, to cover the entire width of the ceiling. After installing the ceiling, we painted the entire room. We also gutted the bathroom and reset the shower so that the homeowners could install new flooring before we painted the room.

Wake Forest Deck Revitalization

Jul 2018

This deck was in pretty rough shape when we got here. We removed all of the old treads and replaced all of them, cutting each piece to match the angle of the tread to the brick siding of the house--each angle was different, so it was pretty tedious, but we think the end product was worth it. Oh, those benches on the deck were actually attached to the deck, so we went ahead and took them off and rebuilt them from scratch. After all was said and done, we applied a beautiful transparent stain (even on the part of the deck behind those thorny bushes).

Wake Forest Bathroom Addition

Jul 2018

This bathroom started off as part of a bedroom. We framed up some new walls, installed the new drywall, got the plumbing in order, set the shower and framed it in, ensuring the framing was totally waterproof before setting down a beautiful tile job, including glass inset corner shelves. Afterwards, we installed that fantastic flooring before setting the toilet, vanity, mirror, and all the other trimmings and trappings without which a bathroom isn't complete.
