William W. Powers State Recreation Area Education / Visitor Center | Feb 2013 | A new Education / Visitor Center. The building lies on a peninsula projecting into Wolf Lake. The peninsula is bounded on the north by Indian Creek, on the south by a lake inlet serving as a boat harbor and on the west and across the road by an existing parking lot. The design focuses on integrating the building and its extensions (an outdoor exhibit area, vending, as well as pedestrian and vehicular access) into the site, capitalizing on its assets, especially its proximity to the water and views to the north and south, while minimizing the environmental impact of new construction. The primary site development strategy is based on: 1. Extending the presence of the building with an entrance forecourt for outdoor classes. 2. Creating a relationship between the new facility and the boat harbor. The building’s structure is of cold rolled metal studs and clad in corrugated metal panels. The large glazed windows are protected by sliding barn doors constructed of perforated cladding material. The interior has durable and low maintenance finishes. | $1.2m | Chicago, IL | |
