After receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Navy, he joined Congoleum Industries, one of the world's largest flooring manufacturers of no-wax, vinyl flooring. It was at Congoleum that Denis received rigorous training in the flooring industry, learning about installation, floor preparation, moisture abatement, marketing and distribution. Denis spent 3 years with Congoleum covering the Midwest, Detroit, Cleveland, Toledo and Southern Michigan. After three years with Congoleum and limited possibilities for advancement, Denis stepped out of the "salary" box and took a territory with Trend Carpet as a commissioned sales associate. Scared to death not to have a set salary, and not being able to get a paycheck unless something was sold, Denis worked extremely hard to learn the "art" of selling floor covering, and never looked back. The thought of unlimited income was his driving factor. In 1984 Denis accepted a management position with Horizon Industries, a large carpet manufacturer out of Calhoun, Georgia. It was in 1984 that Denis moved his family to San Diego and continued his career in Southern California. In 1985, Denis was named Sales Manager of the year for the entire United States. Feeling "limited" working for other companies, Denis started Carpet Club in 1985. Not having enough funds to open a store, Denis purchased a used van, installed a Cedar -Shake roof on the van to make it look like a store on wheels...And thus a Carpet Store at Your Door...Shop at Home was born. The concept was successful, and is now used throughout the country. Denis' success has continued with the Carpet Club, growing the past 25 years. When asked the formula for his success, Denis said, "HARD WORK, HIRING GOOD PEOPLE, and especially...ALWAYS DOING WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE GOING TO DO." Denis feels strongly about giving back to the community. He is an Invest Sponsor for the Classical Academy, and constantly donates to Habitat for Humanity, North County Assistance League, North County Brain Injury Foundation, Escondido Education Foundation, Community Housing, Interfaith Community Services, North County Church, the San Diego Food Bank, Mile Stone Health, and many other churches and organizations that help families in need.
