Arts and Crafts House, Halesite, NY | Jan 2004 | When Paul and I purchased our home in 1999, it was to become a work in progress, spanning some eleven years. In 1929, it had started as a humble stucco Cape style house on a corner lot, which had a somewhat flat yard immediately around the house, and then sloped fairly sharply uphill to the north (right side). Before shots are at the end of the exterior photo series, followed by interior views. After some initial cleaning up, we replaced the Garage in 2000, and began renovating and expanding the house in 2003. In 2010, we added a Plunge Pool to the backyard, relocating and expanding our Koi Pond, significantly changing what was already a beautiful landscape. The home design embraces the principals of small house planning- the total square footage is only 2,100 sf. We have a Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen, Mud Room/Laundry, Powder Room and Library on the main floor, and three bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs, in addition to a screened Front Porch and open Back Porch. The inspiration for the Plunge Pool came from a vacation in South Africa- we rented a house in Prince Albert (the desert) and enjoyed the simple joy of cooling off in their Plunge Pool. Frank Lloyd Wright included a small Plunge Pool in his Taliesin house in Wisconsin as well. | Huntington, NY |
