I will begin by saying I am a general contractor. I contacted Seal Team paving along with several other paving companies to estimate my driveway. I needed an area of earth removed from beside my garage, drainage laid, and paving installed both on the new area, and over the existing driveway. Initially, I liked the presentation from this company as they are a family run business just like mine. The wife came out to do the initial estimate and the husband and his crew completed the work. I made it clear to them from the beginning that I am a contractor and if they did a good job, I would be sending several jobs per year their way. In fact, I sent one their way even before mine was completed. I was on a job in Middletown, NY that needed several different things on the outside of their property. One was their driveway. I brought 3 companies in for estimates, and Sealteam came in $2000 less than the lowest of the other 2. So, being a general contractor, I took that difference in the price, my markup and wage if you will, and applied it to both of the jobs. Mine and the job in Middletown. We received a written estimate from them laying out the depth of the pavement, 4 inches over the new area, and 2 inches as a cap for the previously laid driveway rather than a full ripout. Also, for the drainage install with a trench drain to be placed in front of my garage door. They sent their crew to my house to complete the excavation and lay the drainage. 5 minutes into the job, our cable was cut. This is not completely their fault as the wire was very shallow, but it just set the tone for the rest of the job. They excavated, ditched, and laid the perforated and solid pipe for my drain and storm drain run off. I purchased all the materials, they were to lay it, then cover it to be paved. They finished and told me it was ready to go. As I do with everything, I checked it over. None of the pipe joints were glued, only the fittings near the downspouts themselves, and they were completely misaligned and covered in primer. The pipe was all pitched the wrong direction. Even the drain itself was back pitched. I called them about it, but they couldn't get back to me for a few weeks. So, rather than risk it not being right, I dug it all up myself and installed it correctly. They began the project in the beginning of August. The paving didn't occur until Oct 25th. This after many back and forths between us and them. Less than 6 months after completion, the driveway began to fail. There is no adhesion between the cap they put down over the old driveway. The thickness is approximately 1/2 inch when 2 was promised in writing. There is a hump near the drain and a low spot in the main area below where water pools. The pavement is failing with large areas of pavement loose and gone from the surface. Every time it rains, the water streams between our old driveway and the thin layer they applied making the entire application float off the surface. I can lift the pad by hand when this occurs. I contacted them about the driveway failure in May of this year. I was extremely patient, allowing for now 5 different appointments that have been missed or rescheduled, sometimes with a month or more between responses or any form of contact. We have contacted them recently and told them they are no longer welcome on our property. This after 4 months of patiently and kindly asking them to have the repair done. We will be contracting another pavement company to do the repair and pursuing Seal Team for a refund in small claims court. When approaching them with the request for a refund, I was met with "We ain't giving you shit! Take me to court!". It is baffling to me that they wouldn't prioritize a contractor that has already and most certainly would continue to provide them jobs. To be brushed off and shown their disregard for the quality of their work just confirms that they will absolutely not be my pavement company going forward. I share this story as an accurate portrayal of our experience. You can make your own decision on who to use for your own project.
