dRemodeling took an under-utilized basement space and made it into the hub of this Newtown Square home. dRemodeling took a prefinished basement with bulky and obtrusive columns and re-partitioned it to allow for greater use of the space incorporating a new exercise room, bathroom, reading nook, raised bar/ dining area, wine storage, play room, kids corner, and general storage. The overall feel of the basement gives the occupant a sense of comfort. This was accomplished through a variety of soft textures and neutral colors, interspersed with pops of a subdued red for visual interest throughout the basement. It was designed to be inviting for both the refined tastes of the client and their young grandchildren.

An outdated kitchen in a gorgeous 1920s Normand-style home was in desperate need for a total revamp to bring it into the 21st century. The hexagonal terra cotta floor was uneven and the ceiling light boxes made the short ceiling seem even more oppressive. Fresh white cabinets and streamlined design brought this once dark and crowded space into a modern arena great for entertaining. A peek at the original plan drawn in 1920 shows the traditional servant quarters kitchen complete with a hearth for cooking, a pantry for dishes/cleaning, a cold cellar storage, and servant stairs. This original layout had been modified by the previous owners, but the structure still posed some issues for this renovation. The old stairs created problems when installing the recessed lights as the structure limited even positioning of the lights. 5 recessed cans were used instead of the standard 6 diameter when the lighting plan grew to include 4 extra lights. The once was cold cellar was framed with the one-and-a-half foot thick exteriors walls to help regulate temperature, which limited options for storage in this area. Keeping the existing walls as is, a shallow pantry was created with a sliding barn door painted in an accent color that acts as pantry storage in a new modern way. With 4 entrances into this kitchen, the cabinetry lines became chopped up with distinct areas for cleaning, prepping, storage, and cooking. A large central island topped with a blended walnut butcher block, accommodates informal dining for 6, and provides plenty of room for prep work. With the crisp white lines of Shaker style cabinetry, modern stainless steel fixtures and appliances, with a warm grey large scale tile underfoot and a light washed out grey on the walls, this kitchen sets its foot firmly into the modern day and age but lends a touch of its French Country Farm style into its architectural features and accessories.

A lofted airy white space defined by black architectural lines and warm wood tones creates a modern master bath with rustic organic touches. The original bathroom had a 3 by 3 stall shower in a tiny nook of a shower while the master bedroom took up more than enough space. Extending 5 into the bedroom created plenty of room for a luxurious walk in shower and a privacy wall between the vanity and water closet. A partial wall was built that backs up the vanity that acts as a privacy wall for the toilet. The sole window for the room on this wall was taken into special consideration and by allowing the privacy wall only to extend up 8, it allows the light to bounce off the vaulted ceiling and get deeper into the space. Light gently filters in through the grass and golden yellow gingko leaves captured in the resin panel. A wood frames acts as support and doubles as storage space. Black framed glass enclosure gives the space an architectural edge and is accentuated by the modern black framed vanity and accessories. The sliding barn door adds a note of warmth and compliments that warmer tones found in the ceramic wood plank floor tile. The overall space feels contemporary but friendly, with notes of color and warmth that add depth and dimension to an otherwise architecturally crafted space.

This tiny kitchen space in the outskirts of Philadelphia was flanked by an exterior porch in poor condition on two sides, and the homeowners had visions of a modern kitchen that could expand into the porch and take full advantage of the underused space. The expansion doubled the size of the kitchen, creating room for a full line of cabinets, with a generous island with seating for four, as well as a pantry closet and breakfast nook. White cabinetry was used to reflect the light from the multiple windows and clerestory, and a natural slate stone floor tile anchors the vaulted space. Quartz countertops with a soft suede finish enhance the softness of the otherwise crisp space. Ceramic Carrera look-a-like tile adds texture and compliments the matte black hardware and faucet. The centerpiece of the room is truly the 4 thick single oak wood slab that sits atop the island. Supported by two industrial iron brackets, the island commands attention with its size and rustic texture. This kitchen renovation has created an amazing space for this growing family to enjoy for years to come.

Wood paneling and large corner Jacuzzi tubs were cleared out of the way for this modern makeover for a master bath in Gwynedd Valley. Dated wood paneling covered the walls in the hall and bath, contrasted by a bright white walk-in shower and huge Jacuzzi tub. The large windows were inspiring, but left some need for privacy so top up/bottom down shades were installed that didnt sacrifice the view. With the addition of radiant heated flooring, the homeowners can cozily enjoy this bright and sunny space year round comfortably. A desire for a modern Zen-like bathroom steered the design towards minimalistic but powerful design features. A white sculptural tub and its modern tub filler is the main focal point upon entering the space, silhouetted by the large picture windows overlooking Philadelphias countryside. A custom frameless glass shower enclosure on the left, overlooks the tub and out into the woods. Backed by natural slate pencil tile, it brings a sense of security and warmth to the open space. Soapstone threshold compliments the ink black pebble stones for a truly at one with nature showering experience. A floating vanity in a rich warm cinnamon wood finish resonates in the space and is topped by modern stainless steel fixtures, integrated sink tops, and a frameless mirror. Overhead lighting is provided by 4 recessed LED light fixtures that illuminate the space softly. Wall sconces on the lower level light the soaking tub and commode tucked behind the half wall separating the shower from the lower level. The wall hung toilet provides easy cleaning access with its tank tucked neatly behind the wall. While working in the master bath, new carpet, fresh paint, and new ceiling and lighting fixtures were installed in the bedroom. A complimenting wood makeup vanity was installed in the hall to coordinate with the bathrooms, picking up the soapstone in the countertop and the rich warm wood tones. All the master suite needs now is a bed!

This kitchen is a complete transformation in University City. The original kitchen, while relatively spacious, was not optimized for use and showed a great deal of age in the cabinets. The clients dreamt of a modern overhaul for their aging kitchen and requested a monochromatic scheme. The new kitchen is beautiful with the appeal of a high-design space and the function of a well-designed one. The new kitchen hosts stark white cabinets with oversized cabinet hardware. New stainless steel appliances are included as well as a new kitchen island. The kitchen countertops are a crisp black which replace the old laminate countertops. One of the most striking elements in the kitchen is the new flooring: a combination of grey, black, and white tiles that produce a woven effect. This flooring is a drastic change from the existing linoleum floor. The addition of a new isolated cooktop nook is a beautiful feature in the new kitchen. Backed by gorgeous black and white glass tiles and paired with a modern steel range hood, this new cooking area is clean and functional. The kitchen is tied together by black and white glass backsplash throughout the kitchen, which shows movement and sparkle above the countertops. New glass pendants hang over the spacious kitchen island and a dramatically arching faucet tops the new sink. The final result is a completely monochromatic space that is defined by modernity and crispness.

This South Philadelphia basement was a transformation from an unfinished storage room to a clean, organized, finished space with living area and a bathroom. The project called for a complete overhaul. The existing conditions did not offer any level of organization or convenience, and the basement offered a cold, barren aesthetic. A beautiful level of finish and sophistication was developed in the basement by covering existing ductwork and unfinished walls, providing new tile flooring, and building essential storage elements. The generous size of the basement was capitalized upon by developing new storage closets and adding a basement bathroom. The basement stair was enhanced and a finished storage space was implemented underneath. Special attention was paid to small details; classically styled closet doors, hardware, and trim details were utilized to create a sophisticated and elegant appearance. This successfully redeveloped basement offers a usable, completely finished space that has become a welcome addition to the home. The once inhospitable storage space has been transformed into a welcoming, usable room.

This project allowed an existing dark and dreary bathroom to be altered into a sparkling, modern space. The dark blue wall tiles were replaced by small, synchronous green tiles. The new tiles were placed on a new, waterproof gypsum wall board base and extend floor to ceiling. A large white Jacuzzi tub was added to the space, and is enclosed by frameless glass doors. These features allow the bathroom to take full advantage of natural light from the large, existing window. A white, modern toilet fixture creates a bold modern touch, but does not surpass the focal point of the room: the beautiful new sink. A new, marble bowl sink gracefully sits on a black stone vanity top, while a new stainless steel faucet fits into the corner, freeing up counter space. Dark wood cabinetry allows the sink to stand out, while providing generous storage for this small bathroom. These highly modern, yet elegant touches allowed this transformed bathroom to be a bright and functional place.
