Classic Kitchen in Del Mar | Aug 2014 | Main Objective: Design and develop renovation plans that will allow homeowner to remodel in stages over time. Allow space for multiple cooks to function in the space without traffic jams while also entertaining guests. Style Profile: Classic, transitional, with focus on entertaining. Just because a home is going to be renovated in stages over time, doesn't mean it cannot be designed in full from the start. Room was left for a door to a future walk-in pantry next to the fridge. A bank of drawers in close proximity to the dining room makes a convenient place to store silverware and table linens. Wine storage, accessible from the dining room allows guests to help themselves without being in the way of the cook. Because not all wine needs to kept cold, a wine cubby, placed next to the wine fridge, can store your reds next to your cool whites. Work zones are replacing the triangle. This layout maximize efficiency in favor of task-specific zones. More cooks, as well as their guests are better accommodated without traffic jams. Same size upper and base cabinets on either side frame the hood and range into a balanced focal point wall. The configuration, trash, sink, then dishwasher, makes the host's job easy during clean up. Just scrape, rinse, and load. Task lighting over you major work zones make cooking, cleaning, and serving easier. A microwave drawer placed in the island, allows for multiple cooks to work without battling over space. The lower height also ensures accessibility for everyone in the household. | Del Mar, CA
Beach Bungalow | Jun 2014 | Main Objective: maximize visual space and feel of the kitchen. Style Profile: Transitional and casual space befitting to home's style and location. Upper cabinets were held down from the open beam ceiling for a more expansive feel overhead. A counter-height overhang provides conversational seating and creates clean, visual site lines, expanding the kitchen outward. White cabinets brighten the kitchen to feel larger. Shaker style cabinets suit clients transitional style and have a visually lighter feel in their simplicity. Fixtures, appliances, and hardware in matching finishes create cohesion, an important aspect in a smaller kitchen. Cup-pull handles and an apron front sink add cottage charm and casual style in this beach bungalow. | San Diego, CA
Mid-Century Modern Kitchen | Jun 2014 | Main Objective: Counter architectural abnormalities in favor of linear design and improved functionality. Style Profile: Mid-century, open layout, casual comfort This particular kitchen presented us with a challenge: a misaligned sloped ceiling. To counter this, we added a ceiling soffit. This both conceals the odd angle of the ceiling pitch, without bringing the overall ceiling height down, and creates a linear feeling, typical of the mid-century style the client was after. The soffit also frames the room and allows integration of task lighting of major work zones. An open concept floor plan doesnt mean the rooms have to be indistinguishable from one another. Ceiling beams discreetly separate the kitchen from the living room. The beams and soffit work together to frame the kitchen as its own space. The island makes a convenient place to stow the microwave, as its adjacent to the fridge. The lower height makes it easier for children to cook without drops and spills. A walk-in pantry was created to give the family plentiful storage. Linear site lines and an open layout are idyllic in modern style. A single level island not only achieves both of these concepts, but offers seating where friends and family can gather outside the kitchen and still chat with the cook. | San Diego, CA |
