Cromwell Area Residence | Feb 2014 | New waterfront front home for extended family gatherings. The asian inspired home features broad expanses of glass, timber posts and beams and a gallery space that looks to an asian garden. | $800k | Gig Harbor, WA
Remodel | Oct 2011 | My clients have an historic home in the North End of Tacoma. It is notable for being the home of one of the owners of a local lumber mills in the late 1800's to early 1900's. The home is a good example of late 1800's victorian design in Tacoma. The current owners asked us to design a small addition that would complement the original design and to update and remodel the interior to bring the home into the 21st century. All along we had to be mindful of maintaining the character and charm of the original home. Construction: York Enterprises | $400k | Tacoma, WA
Remodel | Aug 2009 | The homeowner's project started life as a waterfront vacation cabin in the 40's. Located on Fox Island in the Puget Sound, the same family owned it for about 50 years. Now that the two of the kids have gone off to college, Dawn and Mike decided it was time to downsize and move to the cabin. We wanted to maintain as much of the charm of the original cabin as possible while expanding to meet the needs of a modern family. We were limited to two bedrooms due to the septic requirements. An additional "office" serves as a third bedroom/guest room. To finish it off a covered porch with a wood-burning fireplace provides a wonderful, warm protected space for all kinds of northwest weather. The exterior has been carefully crafted to provide a complimentary addition to the old cabin without overwhelming the charm of the original portion. Shingles and river rock give a wonderful texture and remind us of the history of the home. | $500k | Fox Island, WA
Remodel | Mar 2009 | The homeowners had a wonderful log cabin structure with a view of Mount Rainier. They asked that we design an addition that took advantage of the view and added a needed living room, master bedroom, lower level utility and an elevator. How do you add on to a wonderful log cabin? Our concept was to create an addition that infilled between the main log house and the garage. Major elements of the concept include a wonderful tower that has an elevator and stair topped by a loft room. The master bedroom suite is upstairs and the main living room and entry provide a much needed emphasis on the awesome location and view of the mountain. | $500k | Puyallup, WA
Remodel | Sep 2008 | The home-owners had a home in the north end of Tacoma with a great view, but an aging exterior and an interior that didn't quite mesh with their lifestyle. A desire for the use of green and eco-friendly materials lead to some interesting solutions. The exterior was expanded and freshened with natural cedar shingles and board and batten siding. The roofing the homeowners chose is a recycled rubber tile. A transitional Asian/northwest theme is emphasized. The interior was reorganized and expanded with a loft over the existing kitchen, an additional bedroom and expansion of the master suite for a clean modern contemporary look. The interior materials also include recycled tile, recycled paper countertops and cork floors. The home was featured in the Master Builders Remodelers Tour and won a Green Award for Gary Howe Construction. | $700k | Tacoma, WA
New Home | Mar 2007 | "This new home is sited on a lagoon on Whidbey Island north of Seattle and has views of Puget Sound and Mt. Baker. The process we have gone through includes programming and the development of five very different concepts that challenge an art teacher and philosophy professor, as well as the architect, to stretch their imaginations and really examine the craft of architecture. Paul and Susan chose a scheme that we defined as ""The Primitive Hut with Bermuda Roof"". This concept features a simple square form for the main house with a rotated ""lighthouse"" and detached garage. The forms are an exciting, and at the same time serene, compound in the woods. The home features energy efficient SIPS panels, steel frame, a curved glass wall, concrete floors and a geothermal heating system. Paul and Susan have filled their house with art. Construction: Clifton Custom Homes - Whidbey Island" | $500k | Coupeville, WA
Project 7 New Home | Nov 2006 | The homeowners asked us to work with them on the design of their new home on Horsehead Bay in Gig Harbor. Their site features a natural medium bank overlook with sweeping views of the bay, Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. The design of this home echoes historic camp or lodge architecture with board siding, shingles and corrugated galvanized metal roofing. The wood windows have a classic red painted finish. Also on the site is a boathouse and guest cottage. No camp or lodge structures would be complete without generous amounts of stone. The interior features heavy timber beams and posts, stone, concrete and pine plank flooring. The kitchen cabinetry has been designed by Vicky to resemble historic panel cabinets that appear to be pieces of furniture. Construction: Lindow Construction" | $800k | Gig Harbor, WA
New Home | Aug 2006 | The homeowners found a lot on Fox Island that has great views of Point Fosdick, the Narrows Bridge and Mt. Rainier. Our concept is designed to create a lodge with a bit of a twist. The exterior has all of the traditional lodge cues but when you look at the plan you see an undulating wall along the waterside that provides changing focus on the various views. The Master Bedroom is twisted off to provide a more private sanctuary. Access to the outdoors is provided on the waterside covered porch or to a sun terrace on the southwest corner. The upstairs includes a loft overlook, a media room, pool table and 2 bedrooms with computer/study area. Gary Howe Construction helped bring this home from concept to reality. | $800k | Fox Island, WA
