All Together Now | Jan 2010 | Gray Matter: Cladding the exterior of this 1960s split-level in gray elastomeric stucco was both practical and aesthetic. The waterproof, easy-care choice integrated the home's multiple additions into a cohesive energy-efficient whole. Cook's Dream: Tall walnut cabinetry, recessed flush, creates a continuous wall of ample storage. Stainless appliances-including an oven with warming drawer, microwave, steam oven, and built-in coffeemaker are centrally located in an aesthetic T pattern. Twin dishwashers and separate refrigerator and freezer add convenience to entertaining prep and cleanup. | $750k | Washington, DC

Switching Sides | Apr 2013 | To make a clean break with their dated master bathroom, these clients would first need to trade places with their teenage son. A floor plan flip, swapping the master suite with the son's bedroom on the other side of the house allowed the new design to take advantage of the structure below, pushing out with a dormer bathroom addition over the existing breakfast room. | Arroyo Grande, CA
Problem Solved | Jun 2012 | SPACE CASE. Opening up the cramped kitchen in this 1980s condominium created the elbowroom the client needed with direct sight lines to the panoramic view beyond. A chunky granite bar-height table added to the working island now a connects the kitchen and dining area. | Bethesda, MD
Magical Transformation | Oct 2011 | ROSY GLOW. Finding enough space for a modern master bath is often a problem in older home remodels. Reconfiguration does the trick here-creating room for a frameless shower, his and her sinks, a separate toilet area and a tub with a view. | Victoria, TX
From Vision to Reality | Apr 2011 | PICTURE-PERFECT FRAME. Viewed from the street, the home's clean lines and crisp design now speak for themselves, clearly, through enduring materials such as flagstone, sleek stainless steel, a modern color palette of sophisticated neutrals, and the welcoming energy of strong red at the front door. | Savannah, GA
What's Cooking? | Jan 2011 | TODAY'S SPECIAL. A narrow hallway addition--small in square footage but big in upgrades--opened up a cramped kitchen for two serious cooks. The new-and-improved space provides ample storage and elbowroom, complete with hard-working cabinetry, unbroken work surfaces, and professional-style appliances. | Savannah, GA
Age & Beauty | Jun 2010 | Substance with Style. A newly retired couple wanted to age in place. So the pair of art collectors set out to create the functionality they needed without sacrificing the contemporary style they loved. The home's sculptural, stainless staircase now transforms the foyer into a welcoming gallery space. A discrete elevator - tucked around the corner - offers convenient access to the master suite above and the lower level. | Chapel Hill, NC
Give It Punch | Jan 2010 | WALL-TO-WALL APPEAL. When the need to open up space meets structural challenges, equal parts of creativity and care came into play. We couldn't move a load-bearing wall, and we didn't want to incur the great expense of moving plumbing and HVAC. So we turned the slices of walls into coordinating design elements - punching out a display niched in one and nesting a TV in the other. | Binghamton, NY |
