You know that feeling of relief when the tree guy finally shows up to your house, after you've waited for seven months because he's "busy" but he's finally there to cut down those dead trees that are hanging precariously over your house? Well, Gibbons Tree Service doesn't offer that kind of feeling or relief. At the outset, let me say that David Gibbons is skilled at dropping a tree to the ground in the spot where he wants it to land. So I commend him for that attribute. But, that's about where his skills end. David quoted me a price to drop four trees, cut and chip the branches and leave only the tree trunks to rot in place on the ground. David arrived on schedule but by himself without a crew and without a chipper. During the day, David mentioned that this would normally be a three-man job, but, his climber recently moved to Maine and he was, "between" help. After dropping the four trees, it was the end of day and David starting packing. I asked if he was returning the next day to complete the job. "No", he said, "I have to be in Duxbury." I looked around and the ground was littered with tree limbs and branches from the downed trees. I said, you were supposed to chip all of these branches. Instead of acknowledging what he failed to do, David offered a series of solutions saying, "…That's firewood, you can burn it." And, "It's going to rot in no time." And, "If you put an ad in Craigslist, someone will come and take all this. Besides, you can't even see it up here, it's in the woods." Clearly, these were not the answers that I wanted to hear. I told David that the job was a mess and I made it clear that I was disappointed with the work. I even told David that I would pay him extra if he would come back and clean up the mess, despite it being part of our original agreement. In the end, I reluctantly paid David and immediately started calling other tree companies to get prices to clean what David had left behind. Indeed, the worst thing about the experience with Gibbons Tree Service is the necessity of bringing someone else in, after paying for a job that was supposed to be done. The next day, another tree company that originally provided a quote to do the same job, viewed David's work. I regret not having used them in the first place, instead of Gibbons Tree Service. The successor tree company representative took one look at what David left behind, shook his head, and simply said, "This is a mess. Who did this?" Because David is books seven months in advance and has no help, he appears to be overextended and any degree of quality or customer satisfaction was absent in my job. Because he was the only person on what he described as a three-person job, by the end of the day, he ran out of time to complete the job and had to run to the next job. Perhaps the one true statement that David made was when he said to me, "You have no idea how much I wanted to find a way out of doing this job, when I got here this morning." Yet, he had no problem taking my money. So, remember, price is what you pay and value is what you get. I received little value from Gibbons Tree Service, especially since I had to hire another contractor to clean up the mess. If asked, would I hire Gibbons Tree Service again? I'd have to give an emphatic, no.
