Warning to Homeowners: Unscrupulous Contractor (Doug Von Eschen) aka Energy Performance Remodelers After ice dams on our roof caused considerable internal damage to our home, we hired Mr. Doug Von Eschen, aka “Energy Performance Remodelers”, to do the repair work. We hired him on the advisement of a work colleague. In July, 2019, we signed the contract and paid Doug the first installment from the insurance payment. We were assured that all work would be completed in 8 weeks. After 9 months, the work is still not only incomplete, but even work supposedly completed remains unacceptable. The kitchen alone caused us to spend weeks in a hotel with our three children. This cost, along with the food money, during our stay there, resulted in Doug assuring us that, “I’ll pay for that myself, for you guys.” He reneged on that promise. Basically Doug was just a pivotal person who coordinated different sub-contractors to do this work. He, as it turns out, never had expertise in construction at all. The floor contractor, Gabe, did a wonderful job and was professional in everything he completed. The cabinet and tile contractor were one and the same person. This “so-called professional”, was a butcher with everything he endeavored to do, including cracking 2 tiles, which he left, in a newly installed backsplash. Doug thought we were being too “picky” about the cracked tiles. This same tile and cabinet contractor also put deep gouges in the newly installed wood floors, while moving the kitchen stove. This also didn’t phase Doug. When asked why there were no tiles above the cabinets, the contractor said it was above where the average person can see, so he didn’t need to install the tiles there. He also didn’t see why it was necessary to install tiles beneath the cabinets because, “No one sees under there anyway.”, he stated. Along with this, this same contractor butchered our brand new, custom kitchen cabinets while forcing the refrigerator into position. After painting the kitchen island which resembles something a 5 year old child would do, he still has not returned to refinish the island properly, and it looks terrible. When we asked why the painter was painting the outer siding in 25 degree Fahrenheit temperature, he stated that he did this all the time. Upon learning that we had received our final insurance payment, Doug asked us to give him the remainder of the money we owned him, so he could pay his contractors. He promised to return to install the gutters and skylights, and replace the broken tiles, and fix the gouged floors, refinish the island and fix the butchered custom cabinets. Upon believing his promises, we paid him the remainder of his money. He, at this juncture, owes us more than $6000 in contracted work, which was never done. He has since moved from Wisconsin to Las Vegas, Nevada. He never replies back to us when we try to text or call. In summary, if anyone needs work done in or around their residence, do yourself a huge favor! Never consider hiring Doug Von Eschen, and Energy Performance Remodelers. He is, without a doubt, a truly unscrupulous contractor according to the way he has treated and cheated us.
