Roof Replacement on a Historic Building

Aug 2014

The Friends of Jerusalem Mill (FOJM) hired TSW Roofing Solutions to replace the roof of an original 1760s rubblestone building with a new cedar shake roof. We won the project in a competitive bid process partly because our approach went beyond the basic specs. We didnt just want to replace the roofwe wanted to solve current problems and deliver a better result for the future.

Installation of New Cedar Shake Roof in Historic Jerusalem Mill Village

Mar 2015

We installed a new cedar shake roof on the wheelwright shop "ghost frame" at Historic Jerusalem Mill Village. The ghost frame was built in 2004 by students in Harford Community College's Historic Preservation program, but remained without a roof covering. The frame is an essential multi-use structure for Jerusalem Mill's public and private events, As part of a project to ensure its long life, the Friends of Jerusalem Mill stabilized the foundation and hired TSW Roofing Solutions for the roofing component. We installed 2" x 6" tongue & groove #2 pine over the existing roof trusses to provide a substrate for the new shakes, ice and water shield underlayment throughout the eaves and peak, cedar beather underlayment throughout the roof deck, a new 16 ounce Copper drip edge along perimeter of roof, and treated 24" cedar shakes secured with hot dipped zinc coated nails. The new shakes have a 10" exposure, with 18" of 30# felt laced over the top of each course of shakes. We also installed a 16 ounce copper ridge cap at the peak, secured with cleats. It's a beautiful new roof that perfectly complements Jerusalem Mill's historic buildings.
