Log Cabin Kitchen Remodel | Aug 2017 | Check out this project on our website: http://www.herchichome.com/rustic-chic-kitchen-remodel The Client This family of four lives in a single-family, custom log cabin built in 2003. It features more than 5,000 sq. ft. with four bedrooms, six baths, an elevator and a fully-finished lower level complete with it’s own apartment below. The home sits on more than 10 acres of a creek front private wooded lot. It features a wrap around deck and a swimming pool. The Challenge Every kitchen remodel project we work on starts off with the need to solve some sort of problem for the homeowner’s space. The original kitchen in this custom-built log cabin had a few. First off, the white cabinetry in the kitchen was original to when the home was built, so it was old and stained. Then there was a HUGE bar that blocked the walkway from the family room (a main thoroughfare) into the kitchen. And with the way the island was situated, only one person could fit between it and a peninsula in front of it. This made cooking together a nightmare. Next, the access to the home’s main floor laundry could also be accessed through the pantry in the kitchen. Running the washer and dryer next to the pantry where food was stored caused mold and swelling of the homeowner’s food items. The kitchen was also very dark, lacked good storage and there was no room to host guests who wanted to sit in the eat-in part of the kitchen. And the floors in the eat-in area got uncomfortably cold in the winter time. The floors in the kitchen were the old laminate squares and it was a dark brownish color that made the kitchen feel drab. Finally, the red paint and country-style wallpaper made the homeowner cringe every time she looked at it. The Solution We needed a budget-conscious kitchen remodel solution that addressed all the issues and made the kitchen a place where the homeowners wanted to gather again. Our design plan included the following items: A “rustic chic” design style that had some pizzaz, but fit in with the home’s design since it was a custom log cabin Ceramic tile floors in the kitchen, pantry and laundry Heated floors under the tile in the eat-in kitchen area New paint in the kitchen, pantry and laundry Brand new kitchen cabinetry and hardware New cement farm sink and cement prep sink New faucets and water filtration system Extra large island with enough seating space for the entire family Granite countertops with “leathered” finish Custom chunky shelves flank the window over the sink, the pantry and microwave Custom barn doors and hardware on the new pantry and laundry room Closed off entrance to laundry from pantry Relocated exterior entrance to laundry to allow better traffic pattern LED recessed ceiling lighting to brighten the kitchen space Updated lantern style lighting over the island and sink New ceiling fan in the eat-in kitchen to allow for better air flow New wine fridge Custom lockers for easier storage The Final Project The homeowners and their children were thrilled with their new kitchen. They love the space and the kids love having a place to store their belongings when they come in from school. Everyone can sit at the bar and enjoy conversation while someone is cooking and they can gather at their new dining room table and have warm toes in the winter. | $50k | Indianapolis, IN | |
