Old Fort Cabin | Jul 2014 | This modern cabin in the mountains outside of Asheville serves as a simple retreat for our clients. They are passionate about fly-fishing so when they found property with a designated trout stream, it was a natural fit. We developed a design that allows them to experience both views and sounds of the creek and a relaxed design style for the cabin which is a counterpoint to their full-time residence. The land around the cabin also created significant challenges: remote and steep land with limited access for larger vehicles as well as staging areas for contractor. We developed an efficient footprint and space planning to fit the land and minimize foundation and roof costs. The project uses an efficient thermal envelope and mechanical systems to achieve Designed to Earn Energy-Star 3.0. The cabin has a unified palette of interior materials such as the cost-efficient, clear finished spruce paneled walls and ceilings and a painted No. 2 hard maple floor enhanced the perceived spaciousness of the open main level floor plan. Exterior materials were selected for durability and lower maintenance and the color palette blends the cabin into the surrounding forest. | Old Fort, NC | ||
