Established in 2001, Siegman Associates, Inc. specializes in developing distinctive designs through a collaborative approach with its clients. Reflecting on the community and the context of place are the firm's core inspirations. Its Architecture is alive to the subtleties of space, man-made, or natural, and to the rich possibilities of materials and means of construction. We have applied green building practices and techniques for over a decade, and it continues to be a cornerstone of our practice today. Siegman Associates is dedicated to responsive and responsible architecture. Elihu Siegman and Michael Silverman have many years of combined experience in a variety of large-scale projects, commercial, residential and institutional. For over 20 years they have worked together on religious, educational, residential and mixed-use projects. What is Design Build? Historically, architects were intimately involved in the execution of their designs. The great Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi was known to sit under an umbrella at the construction site, refining and clarifying his drawings, and handing them to the craftsmen as they worked. "Design Build" recaptures the intimacy of that process. Different from the now accepted separation of architect and contractor, Design Build is a seamless, natural process, which minimizes miscommunication between the parties and does away with many of the conflicts of interest inherent in the separated method. We feel that it "puts everyone on the same side of the table" - owner, developer, architect and builder. The design process includes pre-design, schematic design, design development, and construction documentation. Construction management covers everything from cost estimating, bidding and awarding of contracts, to critical-path scheduling, purchasing, day-to-day on-site supervision, and regular monitoring of the project budget. In our practice, construction management enters the process from the outset, informing the design in a variety of ways. We consider not just how it will look as a finished product, but how the building will be assembled, and how the project will be staged. We call this "economies of assembly" and it is often overlooked in conventional approaches to the design and construction of buildings. We also consult with our contractors at various stages of design, and we develop a line-item estimate while the design is still in the development stage. Thus we maintain a constant dialogue between the design and the budget. The design process, in turn, continues into construction, allowing for design refinements as project develops and matures. With Design Build, such refinements are easier to implement, avoiding cumbersome, and often redundant, paperwork. Moreover, the designer's intimacy with the architecture is present throughout the construction, and insures that the integrity of the design is maintained throughout. Construction is elevated to a process no less creative and compelling than the design. Using the same firm for design and construction is advantageous in getting the project completed on time and on budget. This is due to the simple fact that all phases are run from our one office.

Single Family Residence | Oct 2009 | This 6,500 sf custom home takes advantage of a passed-over lot to contribute an attractive new home to a developing neighborhood in a wooded setting. The building is sited as a direct response to the shape and contours of the property, curving with the road to enclose an intimate entry court, presenting a carefully composed facade to the street, and extending out into landscape beyond to define the property's various zones into terraced yards and wooded enclaves. | $1.6m | Asheville, NC
Addition, Remodel | Jul 2008 | This project demonstrates a strongly contextual yet contemporary addition to a 1920's brick residence on an architectural showcase street in North Asheville. Careful attention to composition and detailing resulted in an addition that is one genetically related to it's ancestor, but clearly conceived in the 21st century. The addition connects and opens up the house to the expansive yard below. | $450k | Asheville, NC
Single Family Residence | Jul 2004 | With a modest budget the focus was on designing a simple plan that included all the clients pro- gramatic requirements which incorporated stypatya vedic design principles and was oriented to take advantage of the views. By taking a simple box and shifting half along the long central axis, we created two exterior spaces, one private, a deck, and one public, main entry and sculpture garden. Both exterior spaces in turn respond to the function of each adjacent interior space. | $275k | Sugar Grove, NC
