After doing one project that went well, we hired Lovejoy for a second buildout and didn't even ask for a bid. In general, in the past their work had been good and competitively priced but this time, there was a remeasurement for the final floor plan done by Lovejoy themselves at the beginning of January. We were in the process of moving into our new space. When the time came to dig the trench in the cement to run conduit at the end of February, they gave the wrong plans with the old measurements to trench diggers and the trench was done in the wrong place. The trench was supposed to be put in a specific place that was a certain distance from the walls and all plans had warnings in large letters to check the distance before digging. Lovejoy gave the diggers the old plans and despite the warnings, the trench was dug in the wrong place. They then passed along the same incorrect plans to our cabinet installer. We only discovered this because our cabinet installer noticed that nothing was lining up properly. As a result, we had no option but to redig the trench. If you've never had to dig a cement trench in an interior space, think of jackhammers in the street and the mess it causes. We were forced to build an enclosure to contain the dust (which we did, not them) and incurred thousands of dollars in additional costs for protecting our inventory and additional cleanup, as we had already moved much of our inventory and fixtures. This caused a huge amount of mess, hassle and a delay in reopening our business, with tens of thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs and lost revenue, all easily documentable. Lovejoy compensated themselves for the cost of fixing their mistake by jacking up some of the costs on change orders (think $3000+ to install a door) and refused to even acknowledge the mistake nor offer one dime of reduction in their fees. Despite our efforts to work out a fair an amicable settlement, they then placed a lien on our landlord's property. Now we will incur attorney's fees as well. Lovejoy might be fine if absolutely nothing goes wrong but if they make a mistake, it will be your problem not theirs. If you prefer to have someone who takes responsibility for their mistakes, go elsewhere.
