1927 Spanish Colonial Renovation | Aug 2014 | Starting with the remnants of a recent less than sensitive renovation, the client asked us to update the dark and uninviting interiors of this 1927 Spanish Revival while being respectful of it's history. By repainting all the rooms neutral colors and replacing the heavy window treatments with light linens, the house instantly was brighter, and full of light. We studied the floor plan and created a better circulation pattern, straightened out awkward angles, and gained storage areas in the process. Complementing the original character of the house, we custom designed lighting, the zinc hood, and a banquette in the kitchen. The result is a house full of light, period details and a thoughtful material palette. What couldn't be salvaged was recreated. An exterior courtyard with plunge pool, custom fountain, pergola, new landscape, and circular driveway added an extra element of charm to this outdoor space completing the transformation. | Homewood, AL
Whimsical Cottage | Aug 2014 | This project was a renovation of the clients existing house. We were asked to add a second story, screened porch, and total re-design the existing house, which was a typical ranch house of the 1950s. We designed a cottage-style house with high gabled roofs, a swooping entrance element and topped it with a cedar roof. Because we were painting the exteior of the house white, we choose to use black extruded aluminum windows to accentuate the contrast. The existing house was lacking in natural light, so we added floor to ceiling windows at the front and at the breakfast area. The master bath also has a wall of windows behind the vanities to maximize the daylight. Clerestory windows were added in the main stairwell to push light deeper into the house. A new hardscape and landscape design completed the design and anchored it to the site. | Homewood, AL
