EXCESSIVE CHARGES My intent for writing this review is to try and help others, especially elderly individuals like myself be aware of unfair pricing practices. On 8/5/2016, I had sod installed in an area of my front lawn by Handyhands. I was completely inexperienced in sod costs, reasonable and fair labor charges etc. I am estimating that my ignorance cost me about $1,000.00 in excessive charges (price gouging) by this service. Soon after Handy Hands arrived to start the job it began to rain and work could not be completed. The sod was left on the lawn and covered with a tarp. Handy Hands called the next day and scheduled the work completion for the following Wednesday on 8/10/2016. I voiced my opposition because that would leave the sod sitting for five days in weather reaching heat indices of over 100 degrees. I was assured the sod would be safe, so I reluctantly agreed. When Handy Hands returned on Wednesday, the sod was brown and parched. I was again reassured the sod would rebound in a short period of time. Here is what Handyhands charged me for this rather small project that consisted of just a little over one pallet of centipede sod: a.) Down payment new customers 60%---------------------$888.30 b.) Balance upon completion----------------------------------$577.72 c.) Total-------------------------------------------------------------$1,466.02 Upon completion of the job there was sod left over. I asked him to cover another small area that required only a few more sheets of sod. To my complete surprise, he asked for an additional $400.00. I told him I did not have that much money left to spend on this project. He settled for $250.00. This brought the total for this project to $1,718.52!!. Later, when I took a good second look at the size of the job and the amount of materials used, I started to reason to myself that I had probably had been grossly over charged. Unfortunately for me, I did not do my homework, or at least get another quote before hiring. Here is what I discovered after the fact, when I contacted four different sod farms in S.E. North Carolina: d.) A pallet of centipede sod contains 450 to 500 ft. of sod depending on which farm you purchase from. This is an average of about 150 18”X24” sheets of grass. e.) The cost of a pallet ranges from $140.00 to $168.00. One of the farms carried certified Tiff Blair centipede sod for $140.00 a pallet. f.) A total of 160 sheets of sod were used to complete my yard after the few extra pieces were laid. They were easy to count since they were all really brown in color. Handyhands spent about $200.00 on materials to complete my yard ($200.00-$1,718.52=$1,518.00) over seven times the cost of materials. I contacted two reputable landscaping companies on different days about my concerns. Both agreed to come and look at my yard free of charge. Both were astounded when I told them the cost of the job. One landscaper even replied that he didn’t see how anyone could bring themselves to charge that amount of money for this particular job. One considered fair labor cost at around $450.00. The other quoted $500.00. Initially Handyhands had actually discussed a charge based on mileage and gas for coming out and giving a quote unless he was hired for the job. When I contacted Handyhands and confronted him about my findings, I requested some of my money be returned. He proceeded to tell me about costs that he had to incur that justify his charges. For example, insurance that covers his five year warranty for materials and labor. I have copies of his contract/invoice that clearly states “warranty does not apply”. Anyone that desires pictures of the work that was done on my yard and copies of his charges and invoice/contract can contact me at Lawrence359@aol.com.
