Mid Century Re-Modern

Oct 2014

THE GOAL Update the functionality of a mid-century residence for a growing young family while preserving the classic lines of the house in the Newlands Neighborhood in Boulder, CO. With 2 little kids, the family needed a place that would be both functional and forgiving. THE PROCESS To make the heart of this 3,800-square-foot, three bedroom, two-bath house work better for the homeowners and their children, we sought to improve the connection between kitchen, dining room and the rest of the home. With that purpose in mind, we: Added guest room and office wing to the front of the house; created front courtyard that doubled as an opportunity to enhance curb appeal and define entry sequence as a unique experience Removed a massive fireplace from the center of the house and opened up the floor plan Re-oriented the living room to take advantage of a new outdoor connection; indoor-outdoor fireplace Overhauled the kitchen, adding function and fresh air Focused on key built-in elements to anchor the roomsentry wall, TV area, Office Opened up the basement to add natural light and large operable windows for the kids roomreally transformed it from a basement to a lower level Strengthened indoor/outdoor relationships at every turn; collaborated with a landscape designer to showcase outdoor spaces THE FINAL RESULT This house now has a centrally located living space that serves as the main area where the familys activities take place. Design strategies have been put in place that keep the spaces attractive and organized so that kitchen, family room, and dining room are efficient, multi-purpose spaces that accommodate activities of both children and adults separately or simultaneously.

Modern Golf Course Home

Oct 2014

Modern Golf Course Home This one-of-a-kind home was built in 2014 for a family of five (parents and three children). The house, located in a country club development with strict design guidelines governing many of the exterior characteristics of the building, found its inspiration in the classic west-coast ranch house style a single story structure with low-pitched, sloped roofs and an open, asymmetrical floor plan centered around the backyard and patio. The house is clad in a protective layer of stone, wood, metal and stucco against the harsh Colorado weather. Views out to the golf course landscape, sunlight, shade, easy outdoor living, kids racing about; these are the qualities that most factored into the design. An open plan living and dining space connected to the deck terrace becomes the main social area of the residence. Defined by wood and stone accents, the interiors are a modern display of elegance, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere. Furnishings are simple, sleek and modern. The fully equipped kitchen features high-end appliances. A stairway leads the way towards the lower level, where additional bedrooms, bathrooms, TV room, reading room, wine cellar and storage are located.

Boulder Modern Home Remodel

Sep 2014

HMH was tasked with transforming a dark 1980s residence with a poor floor plan into a bright, functional living space. The original home had a small, outdated kitchen, an entry separated from the living room, a living room with no windows and a dining room that was difficult to access. HMH removed several of the interior walls to create flow between rooms and created an elegant entryway and art gallery. The stair to the basement and laundry room were moved from the public areas to the rear of the house. The entry was relocated adjacent to the public rooms, and a careful repurpose of existing windows had minimum impact to the exterior of the home while allowing more light inside.

Modern Barn

Aug 2014

Originally built to house a garage, workshop and wood storage, this simple structure has been gently re-imagined into a unique guesthouse with a rustic accents and modern comforts. The exterior retains the classic barn appearance, with the addition of carefully placed windows and industrial-looking Corten steel siding. The introduction of a large dormer to the center of the structure was a simple move, but provided multiple functions: breaks up the 8-0 ceiling on the main floor, letting in additional daylight and providing visual relief to the otherwise low ceiling creates circulation space with the rustic steel stair and bridge utilizes reclaimed wood siding on the ceiling and walls, contrasting with white drywall and clean bright finishes visually connects the two upstairs bedrooms with the main floor. The focus of the interior was to preserve and accentuate the barn features as much as possible, and have a warm and cozy, energy efficient guest house. Programming included two bedrooms, two bathrooms, dining area, farmhouse kitchen and pantry, living room and laundry room. Materials and furnishes were selected to create a clean, comfortable and inviting interior with a rustic edge. The exposed steel beam was left unfinished showing its existing wear and tear, and the new steel stair was left raw to eventually age and match the beam. Durable and economical oak floors were used throughout. Traditional subway tile and penny rounds contrast with the modern, clean lines of the kitchen and bathrooms. A custom sliding barn door adds texture to the kitchen and closes off the pantry and laundry room from the space. Furniture was a mix of new and existing, which makes the spaces both familiar and comfortable. All in all, there is a timeless look to the end product; a traditional farmstead structure has definitely been giving a great new lease on life.

Colorado Modern Home

Aug 2013

A young couple came to HMH seeking a green home to fit their active outdoor lifestyle. Located on a sloped site, this house was designed to fit into the landscape and embraces a deft blend of modern design with warm, sculptural materials and forms. This signature Colorado Modern stylea specialty of HMH Architecture + Interiorstakes full advantage of the regions incredible weather, views and distinct lifestyle. Outdoor living spaces extend the house into the site and blur the division between inside and outside. Sandstone walls made from local stone run through the interior of the house. Large corner windows in the kitchen and living room minimize the separation between indoors and out, and open the house to views of downtown Boulder and the mountains. With respect for the environment, the owners required the home to be passive solar with all major living spaces facing south. Custom-designed steel trellis and deep overhangs shade the windows in the summer. The wood flooring, made from recycled railroad ties, adds a simple, slightly rustic design element into the space. Photovoltaic panels on the roof provide all of the electrical requirements and a Coolerado evaporative system keeps the home cool with minimal energy consumption. The result is an artful blend of sustainable features, sculptural spaces, and warm interiors that are fun, rewarding, and beautiful.
