Horizontal Fence with Retaining Wall in Cornelius | Jul 2016 | This beautiful fence was built at the same time as the retaining wall on which it sits. The fence continues around the perimeter of this large Cornelius back yard, and runs along the top of the retaining wall next to the driveway. The client asked for this 2 foot high wall and 6 foot high fence to be built within a one-foot width to stay in between the driveway and the property line. This was an engineering challenge, and we like a good challenge! To accomplish this, we used 12 foot posts. Six feet are behind the fence, with 2 feet freely passing through gravel behind the wall, and 4 more feet underground in wall foundation and further below that. The fence is built with pressure treated pine deck lumber. While not particularly well-suited to fencing, our clients really wanted this material. With great care and attention to detail, we made it work! We built the gates out of lightweight cedar and used steel-reinforced "no-sag" hardware to keep them sturdy without the need for unsightly diagonal beams. The clients chose a solid brown stain for the fence, so the color difference between the lumber will not show through. | $17k | Cornelius, NC | |

Back Yard Drainage, Regrading, and Sodding Project in Providence Plantation | Dec 2015 | Problem: This client's back yard was shaped like a bowl. The house is at the bottom of a hill, right before a large area creek, and has been plagued by years of drainage problems and frustrations with solutions that didn't work. A previous national contractor installed two drain boxes in the yard that weren't working, and the yard stayed swampy and shady. The customer had a lot of trouble keeping grass. Solution: We re-graded the yard, raising the soil by the porch and under the playground, and grading the land so that it drains properly. We trucked in a few tons of organic screened topsoil for this. We dug ditches that drained the property at the back corners, and turned them into beautiful features of the landscape with river slicks from Pennsylvania. The drainage creek on the right goes underground through a filter and white PVC pipe for the last 20 feet. A ton of large rip rap stone was added to the creek bed where each drainage creek empties into the large neighborhood creek. We also built a small platform bridge under the monkey bars and a small planter box in each creek. The half of the yard that was re-graded was then sodded with tall fescue. | $3k | Charlotte, NC |
