Our job consisted of exterior painting (we bought the paint), wood rot repair at a side door and behind the corner of gutter, interior ceiling painting in three rooms and an entryway, and wall painting in two rooms and the entryway. This job was bid and a contract stipulating a specific time frame was agreed upon and signed. Two workers showed up to prep the first day and begin painting the exterior the second day. The third day, only one worker showed up, who according to him, was a plumber by trade. He worked very hard, but was not a professional painter. On the fourth day, only one worker showed up again. The earliest anyone showed up ever was 9:15 am and this was one day after the contract stipulated. One day they didn't show up until after 12:00 pm. For one of the wood repairs, the casing around a door was to be replaced. The wood kit was purchased, but less than 12 inches was used. Instead of replacing the casing as agreed upon, only one side was cobbled together using wood and a lot of caulking. The other side was not repaired, but just painted over. The other wood repair behind the gutter was to replace two pieces of water damaged 1x4. Instead of removing the guttering to identify the extent of the damage, one piece was cut out via reciprocating saw and the nailed/caulked back into place. The other piece was just painted over, which then came off in my hands upon inspection as it was rotten. The amount of wall paint (5 gallons) was found to be lacking and more was needed. This in and of itself was not an issue but for the fact that it was not found until the afternoon of the last scheduled day. This is a mistake that I, an amateur, would he expected to make, but not a professional painter. There has been very little real communication between the owner and I. His workers have been set up to fail by not having adequate direction, supplies, or proper a proper skill set to do the described job. It is now one day after the scheduled finish date and I am sending his workers home at 3:00 pm. The job is still not complete. I have had no communication with the owner today. He has left his workers and his trailer up to their own devices. The worker that has been here all 5 days and the worker who has been with him the last two have done a good job with what they had. The time and personnel management has been very poor. I feel for the workers, but am unsympathetic to the position the management has made for itself. After this post, the owner finally showed up. He brought another casing to install. The workers then proceeded to mortise the hinges into the casing with a screw driver. They then used 2-1/2" drywall screws to fasten everything. The split all of the trim on the inside of the building using these screws. The screws weren't even put in straight, their heads were sticking above the surface of the wood at skewed angles. The wood around the strike plate for the door latch was split out. They door was still unpainted at the bottom. The wiring for the alarm was pulled out of the wall and had to be repaired. When they hung the door on the frame, they did placed the hole for the sensor about an inch away from the target. They also did not take into account the height of the target on the door and the target gouged a 1/2" wide line in the top of the door. I gave the company two tries to fix the wood rot and they failed both times. I am now forced to hire a carpenter to repair what was damaged by this company and sue for restitution in small claims court.
