I hired James Greenhill in November 2014 to do a pool decking job. My first impression was that this is a young, honest family guy trying to get a new business off the ground and he would do a good honest and fair job for his customers. James seemed very knowledgeable about many facets of construction. I saw pictures of some of his work and it looked good and even found him on Facebook showing him with his kids. I’m thinking to myself this is a good guy who deserves a break in the business. There is even one review on Home Advisor where a customer accuses him of not having “any vision”, I asked James about this and he tells me he did $1400. Worth of work for this person and they only paid him $300. Because of this James tells me that he no longer does work up front unless he is paid for the supplies because that incident almost bankrupted him. He was very convincing. Turns out I was wrong about James all along. I paid him $1300. Up front and he said this should cover the supplies, the only supplies I saw was a small load of sand and some old rusted rebar (that remains in my yard unused). [The project was 1437 sq. ft of decking, 1087 sq. ft. of this was already cut out and ready for rebar etc, James only had to cut out 350 sq. ft and then level with sand, rebar and cement. ] After James cut out the 350 sq. ft. of grass he said he needed an additional $560. For more sand and supplies, I’m thinking he is making progress and it does need more sand, so I gave him the money. I never saw James again on the job. On Jan 21 he tells me he has no time to do my job, but he owes me some sand, I said just give me my $560. Cash back that I last gave you. I had to drive to his house 45 minutes from mine and when I got there he only gave me $120. Back, I said I gave you $560. He goes the rest was for supplies. It is a real shame there are people like this out there giving legitimate construction workers a bad name in the business. James kept a total of $1,740 I gave him in cash and then bailed on the job. It will cost me $2,250. To have someone come in and fix what he did and complete the job. With the $440. In cash he refused to return and the additional $2,250. I have lost $2,690. Because of Greenhill & Sons construction and James Greenhill.
