A typical home energy audit includes a complete inspection of your home including (but not limited to) attic insulation and ventilation, wall insulation, windows, doors, HVAC system, waterheater, appliances and lighting. Once data is gather a blower door test is performed using a Minneapolis Blower Door and associated software to determine how leaky the home is. While blower test is running a infrared camera is used (depending on temperatures) to locate areas of concern. Also, during the BD test a Pan Test is performed to determine if any there is any leakage in the HVAC ducting (a Duct Blaster test can also be performed if pan test indicates leakage). Once the test are complete and the data gather a written report is developed to present customer with area of concerns based on their SIR (Savings to Investment Ratio). The Department of Energy (DOE) states consumers who have an energy audit performed and do the work recommended result in as much as a 20% savings on their utility bills. What DOE does not mention is now the home is more comfortable as well.
