Residential Interior Under $100K

Apr 2013

Chrysalis Award Winning Project Residential Interior Under $100K This unique interior project was designed around a natural and rustic theme evident throughout the home. The home's interior was constructed with re-sawn board and batten wood walls, Douglas fir tongue and groove ceilings, and wood floors throughout. The Client had expressed concern that the existing Guest Suite felt small and confined. The two existing stand-alone closets were awkward and did not integrate well into the bedroom. Although the Clients liked the free standing tub, their existing tub/shower combination on a raised platform presented a tripping hazard and leaking issue with only a curtain enclosure. In addition, the Clients expressed concern that the bathing and bedroom areas seemed unrelated to one another. They desired a more cohesive flow and better functional use of space. The Clients' love of nature, natural wood, and art were important elements to be integrated into the new design. In response, we started by changing the location of the bedroom entry and opened up the space, allowing the bathroom and bedroom to transform into a unified Guest Suite. Unique usage of live-edge cypress wood planks, a wood stump, and Manzanita branches brought artistic and functional elements into the space. These elements weren't incorporated without a challenge however; odd shapes and sizes meant careful planning in fabricating the pieces to work for their intended use, as well as determining how to transport the large pieces to the second floor via a narrow stairway. In addition, adequately lighting the new space required working around the existing, exposed, shallow-depth roof structure cavity.

Residential Specialty Item

Mar 2013

Chrysalis Award Winning Project Residential Specialty Item Our Client expressed their desire to be able to use their existing Billiard room in a more functional way; the pool table took up the majority of the space and didn't allow for a comfortable space to relax and entertain. In addition, the Clients' formal dining room was used as a living room, but they expressed to us that they would prefer to use the space in a different way since it was too small for a living room and they do not have need for a formal dining room. The Clients also requested an area in which they could boldly display their collection of art glass. In response, we removed the wall between the Billiard room and Formal Dining room to create one large space. The new open space functions as a place for relaxing, entertaining, and tasting wine. The new space presented an ideal place to create an art wall. An existing wall was transformed by incorporating hand-distressed solid wood floating shelves, high-efficiency lighting and a wine cabinet built into a cultured stone wall. Creating truly floating shelves that do not touch the back wall was challenging, along with figuring out a way to incorporate lighting into the wood shelves and the stone columns. Through careful design, planning, and close coordination with Trade Partners, the production team was able to pull together these functional and interesting elements. This new wall displays the Clients' art glass in a striking and beautiful way.

Outdoor Living

Mar 2013

Chrysalis Award Winning Project Outdoor Living Our Client expressed to us their desire to develop their backyard into an inviting outdoor environment where they could relax and entertain. They wished to include a pool, incorporate the existing spa, create a BBQ & outdoor kitchen, create a gathering space around a fire feature, and develop a separate area as a dog run. Drainage was a big issue and required extensive planning, as there were minimal areas in the yard to incorporate drains. All of these elements needed to fit into the small back yard and side yard spaces; a challenging design task. In response to the Clients' back yard wishes, our design team commenced layout by developing separate "zones" that depicted the approximate needed square feet per zone, and utilizing every square inch of available space. The pool and spa were placed in the far corners of the required property line setbacks. Furthermore, the covered BBQ patio was placed close to the existing kitchen for ease of circulation. The planning phase also considered how the new back yard area would connect to the interior of the house through materials, views, and circulation. New materials were specifically chosen for their longevity and ability to withstand the elements. A linear expansion joint drain was used to remove the runoff water from the back yard. Design elements such as the built in low voltage lights and exterior grade ceiling fan were incorporated to promote usability and enjoyment of the space.
