Clarke staircase restoration

Dec 2018

This project required multiple types of sanders, saws and a number of other power/hand tools. The homeowner just bought the home and was scheduled to move in 17DEC2018 and a baby due at the beginning of January. My original estimate for the job 3200, but I dropped to 1800 to give the homeowner a break. The stairs were a carpeted spiral staircase with pine treads under carpet.once I began the job, keep in mind for majority of the job I did on my own, I ripped the carpet out pulled all staples and with a nail punch hammered in all nailed into the tread. I then did a thorough assessment of each tread and riser to find any damages that would need to be repaired before the next step was to start. There were a number of gouges on the treads and a blown out bull nose about 6” long on the face of the bull nose which I fauxed and rebuilt using an stainable putty in layers then hand sanded to exact contour of the original bull nose. I then sanded every tread down, starting with 40 grit sandpaper to 80, to achieve level planks on each tread and to remove and adhesive or minor damages. I then used the stainable putty on all surface space of the treads and risers to fill any holes and gabs and to give the appearance of one smooth piece rather than multiple piece that were used to build each tread. One the putty was dry I continued sanding using grits 100-340 till I had the desired results of complete evenness and smoothness. After the treads and risers were ready for stain or paint I turned my attention to the railing which I used a chemical stripper and sandpaper to remove the finish and to achieve the desired smooth to the touch results. Once achieved I cleaned and blew out the stairs and surrounding area to ensure nothing would get into the finish as it dried. I proceeded to bag off the stairs from the rest of the home to keep all debris from getting in and covered the floor to avoid drips on the finished floor. I then stained the railings first and then the treads using an espresso oil based stain. Once I had the look I was looking for I used a gloss oil based polyurethane for floors on both the railings and the treads. After the first coat was dry I scuffed them smooth to the touch and blew out the stairs and surrounding area and put 2 more coats to give a strong and visually lasting result. I painted the risers and base of the railing with an semigloss extra white water based enamel in multiple coats. Afterwards I painted each spiral steel spindle with a gloss oil based black paint. Once complete I gave a final coat of poly to the treads and railing. I then broke down the areas and cleaned the house to rid of any messes caused by myself. The project took me 100+ hours with 2 36 hour days so I could produce the best results possible and due to my attention to detail style of work which I acquired during my time in the army I didn’t feel comfortable leaving till I was satisfied with how it looked.
