We wish we had chosen a different architect. Initially, H2D seemed competent and pleasant during the first part of our home remodel. However, our overall experience with them was unsatisfactory. Admittedly, our remodel was problematic and revealed challenges we hadn’t anticipated. However, common oversights and miscalculations by H2D resulted in generated revenue for H2D and added expense and time to our remodel. At the beginning of the project, H2D called for a meeting so we could discuss key design aspects of a particular room. The plans that H2D created after that meeting failed to reflect the very specific design choices we had made. Additionally, H2D miscalculated a key structural measurement that cost us time and money with our contractors (and it was a mistake that we, with no architectural background, were able to clearly see). H2D also provided plans with handwritten notes that we and 2 contractors could not clearly read. We asked the architect to make the notes legible, which was our expectation from the onset. She made them legible, but charged us an additional $1,200 for the changes. After receiving the invoice and us questioning the charge, the architect stated that she “did not work for free.” We asked her to consider reducing the charge by half. She agreed to a 16% reduction. The next invoice we were charged hourly every time a contractor called about our project. H2D managed to recuperate that 16% discount (and then some) by fielding our contractor’s questions. Our last dealings with H2D were when we discovered they had provided the wrong plans to a contractor without key revisions. At this point, all parties involved decided it would be better to deal with our structural engineer and bypass H2D entirely. A relationship with an architect is a critical component to a remodel. We had hoped that our architect would take responsibility for poor work and provide helpful customer service (other significant examples lacking in these areas are not included in this review). The continual errors made by H2D, combined with navigating the architects' temperament, made for a sour experience that aggravated an already stressful experience of a home remodel.

Innis Arden Whole House Remodel | Sep 2014 | H2D worked with this family for several years on their phased whole house remodel on their Innis Arden home. At the start of the design process, H2D developed a master plan for the whole house. The project was broken into three phases and constructed over a series of several years. Phase three consisted of remodeling the main floor of the home. The kitchen was relocated and enlarged for better functionality and to take advantage of the views. The dining room, living room, sitting areas, and bathroom were reconfigured and remodeled with new finishes. Denny Blaine Master Bathroom | Jun 2014 | Although this historic landmark Seattle home was maintained in pristine vintage condition, the master bathroom was in disrepair and in need of a major remodel. The homeowners worked closely with Heidi Helgeson, architect at H2D Architecture + Design, to develop a design sensitive to the home???s historic nature, including materials contiguous to the midcentury era of the home. The finished master bathroom is a delight to all who enter; the original pocket door opens to a room swathed in natural light. A unique wall mounted cabinet, Wallbanger by Loll Designs, and floating double vanity with Ecotop counter provide generous space for two people. Heated floors lead two steps down to a sunken tub/shower framed by two benches and walls tiled in handmade blue and gray Heath tile. The tub/shower is designed with two shower heads, a large niche, and connection to a private patio area. To avoid sacrificing space in the bathroom for a standard door, the large casement window in the tub/shower provides an opening for one to step out onto the patio. The patio, just large enough for a table for two, is nestled in the private rear yard. Other features include Muuto Dots randomly placed as playful wall hooks, hanging planters by Boskke and Ladder + Light, and ceramic pendant lights by Mud Australia. | $50k | Seattle, WA | |
Bridlewood Remodel | Nov 2013 | H2D Architecture + Design worked with this Bellevue family to remodel a major portion of their home. The main floor underwent a substantial redesign and reconfiguration. The kitchen was relocated and redesigned to allow for large, efficient work spaces, in addition to new finishes, fixtures and cabinetry. The kitchen was opened to the recreation room to create several seating areas, a major design goal for this family who enjoys entertaining both small and large groups of people. A new powder room, mudroom and sitting area were created as part of the remodel. In the upper floor, H2D reconfigured the master bathroom and kids' bathroom. The style of this home reflects a traditional farmhouse, but with modern, eclectic detailing. Woodridge Remodel | Mar 2013 | H2D Architecture + Design recently completed a this whole house remodel in the Woodridge neighborhood of Bellevue. The project began with the client's vision to bring more light into the main floor and open up the spaces to the backyard. The design evolved into a wonderful open plan connecting the kitchen, dining, living, and recreation area. All the spaces opened up to the backyard and views of the green space beyond. The kitchen was remodeled with new cabinetry, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances. White oak flooring was installed throughout the main floor. The upper floor master suite was remodeled to include a bedroom with balcony overlooking the back yard, walk-in closet, and master bathroom. The master bathroom includes a steam shower, new cabinetry, and Novustone countertops. Bridle Trails Remodel - Main floor and kitchen | Oct 2012 | This 1970's home was in a need of a kitchen remodel. The design involved opening the kitchen and dining room and removing the dropped ceiling. The ceiling was vaulted to create a large sense of space. The kitchen included bar seating at the peninsula, a single seat at the working island, and a desk at the back of the kitchen.
