Ranch Transformation

Apr 2013

CLIENT: Husband, wife with three adult, college-aged children who live at home periodically. Husband owns a business to assist people in identifying new living situations and services for aging seniors. Wife works in a school system as a leader in technology support. LIFESTYLE: Even with adult children, these clients are still very involved in family, business, community and church. They entertain frequently and gatherings often include performing music together. Their kitchen and family room are the heart of their home but do not provide comfortable space for these activities. CHALLENGES: The old kitchen layout was such that once you were in the u-shape, you couldnt get out and there was no good opportunity to interact with guests or have multiple cooks involved in the preparation of a meal. A tall bar area in front of the sink could not be comfortably used as a bar and created another barrier to the cook interacting with others Cabinet storage was good but not great, and the line of the upper cabinets was a single line snooze-fest, not taking advantage of some lovely vaulted ceilings in the space The location of the desk and the type/location of the pantry were also terribly inconvenient The kitchen and family room are very open to each other, and yet there is no positive relationship between the two spaces A Southwestern-style fireplace dominates the family room, overwhelming the rest of the room and totally unreflective of the familys personal style preferences SOLUTIONS Handsome, hand-built cabinets in the kitchen and built-ins in the family room, along with a newly designed/tiled fireplace, pull together the entire space in a cohesive way that did not previously exist. The new kitchen has an island and a counter level bar to encourage interaction and improve flow in and around the entire area. Changing the position of some of the appliances, the desk and pantry cabinets as opposed to a pantry closet, creates a more convenient layout that does not interfere with the breakfast area as was previously the case. New upper display areas and cabinet detail, create a more interesting line in both the kitchen and family room area, and take much better advantage of ceiling height. Smaller fireplace footprint creates more space for entertaining and musical performances. What was once a make do kitchen to be tolerated, is now a space that reflects the familys style, interests and a space to be fully enjoyed!

From Sad to Sophisticated

Oct 2011

CLIENT: Husband, wife and one young son. Husband is an oncologist and wife is a partner/dermatologist in a thriving dermatology practice. LIFESTYLE: Busy experts in their fields of medicine and leaders in their respective professional organizations. Travel frequently and love to entertain. Wife grows a garden and is a wonderful cook. Maternal grandparents come over to cook (father and daughter make their own pasta!)/eat at least once a week. CHALLENGES: Old, u-shaped kitchen creates bottlenecks; and the flow around the entire main level of the house was poor. wanted better traffic flow from dining room to kitchen, to family room, to entry and guest coat closet Outdated, cabinets and appliances limit storage opportunities and make cooking more of a chore than a pleasure Significantly limited counter space for food prep and cooking, make it impossible to cook together as a family. Needed larger refrigerator to accommodate food for everyday, garden produce and entertaining Old garden window was good for light but was an energy waste Wanted comfortable, casual dining space for 6 but current configuration made this impossible Last but not least, at least one part of the counter needs to accommodate clients pasta maker SOLUTIONS New kitchen layout greatly improves flow. A newly centered doorway to dining room, a never-existed-before doorway to the family room, and an expanded area near the guest coat closet improves the flow of the main floor a hundredfold. The island running through the center of the kitchen also makes the kitchen conveniently accessible to all other areas of the home. A 48 SubZero refrigerator and a 36 gas cooktop with telescoping exhaust replaces the electric cooktop with downdraft, improve all aspects of food handling and storage The new garden window provides plenty of light and greater energy efficiency Available storage and counter space is doubled and arranged in such a way as to make everyday cooking a pleasure and cooking with friends and family a joy Plenty of room in the new layout for food prep, cooking and casual dining for 6 And yes, a part of the counter is just a little longer to accommodate that all-important pasta maker! Family, friends and food are the trifecta for a great life for this family. What was missing was good form and function. With a beautifully updated kitchen and improvements to finishes and flow in other areas of the house as well, this family, at least in terms of their renovated main level, now has it all!

Bold Bungalow Kitchen

Jul 2010

With new appliances on the wish list and a client that may decide to sell and move in the next 5 years, there was a very limited budget for updating this kitchen even though there was a strong desire to see a significant difference. An existing funky color combination of light and dark turquoise with touches of hot pink masked cabinets that were in good condition and a Hoosier cabinet that added much to the uniqueness and overall charm of the kitchen. Limited counter space was further limited with a microwave that sat on the counter and the connecting nook of the kitchen really didnt feel connected at all. Elements/challenges of existing space design include: Limited budget to make significant impact Could make no change to the footprint whatsoever Updating what were probably at least 70 year-old cabinets Gaining storage and counter space Increasing the connection between the kitchen and the breakfast nook Solutions: Cleaning up the surfaces of the cabinets and repainting them white with new, contemporary pulls Highlighting a section of the Hoosier cabinet with black paint to make it stand apart from the rest of what is a white wall of cabinetry Build in the microwave to increase counter space near the range Install new black quartz countertops to set of the new cabinet color Install bright new backsplash in red, white and gold to coordinate with the new gold wall color and brighten the whole space Install new cushions/pillows to coordinate with the kitchen colors Install pendant lights as additional lighting as well as an accent to the beautiful windows along the main wall of the kitchen

Greenwood Village Interior Design

Aug 2009

The first words this client ever said to me were, I have been through three designers! Could be a warning sign of trouble ahead but I signed up anyway for an opportunity to provide her with a kitchen that had in her words a WOW Factor! The full project included a storage area from the garage, the existing laundry and powder rooms and the existing kitchen. We want a bit lighter and brighter as well as some unique appointments that would set this kitchen apart from hundreds of others. Irony of ironies is the fact that there were many times during the construction and completion of the kitchen that the tradesman and neighbors and friends would see our progress and say Wow . . . and it didnt cost me a dime! Elements/challenges of existing space design include: Move laundry room to garage storage area but still provide access to it via inside the house Rework laundry room into a butlers pantry for more storage and as an upgrade to compete with other homes in the neighborhood Update powder room in keeping with the new finishes in the other areas of the remodeling project Open up some of the walls to invite more light and visibility into and out of the kitchen Update all of the appliances, cabinets, pulls, plumbing, virtually gut what existed and replace it with something new and different Establish a contemporary style versus the dark, outdated traditional spaces that currently existed Solutions: All new stainless steel appliances, including a wine refrigerator in the butlers pantry and replacing an electric cooktop with a gas one A total rearrangement of the appliance locations to optimize, flow, accessibility, counter space and the look of the new kitchen/entertainment space Create entry into house from previous garage space for new laundry room location New laundry is lighter and brighter to make laundry almost a pleasure New butlers pantry in the old laundry space is a wonderful addition off the kitchen for storage & wine refrigerator The new powder room has an aluminum openwork base with a guartz counter and integrated sink, new lighting and mirror and a fantastic chocolate wall color that makes it all pop! New cabinets that combine cherry slab doors and aluminum frame doors with glass inserts and cabinets sitting on aluminum legs combine with clean, straight pulls, vertically-installed 1x8 mixed-color glass tiles and cantilevered shelves to create a contemporary setting that is at once impressive and yet comfortable Multiple framed openings to the sunroom invite light and visibility for inhabitants of the kitchen any time of the day
