A house built to PH standards is capable of providing a comfortable indoor climate by just sitting there, hence the term "passive house". In cold climates and seasons, residual heat from solar gain, appliances, lighting and building occupants (people and animals) can be enough to comfortably heat the house. Supplemental mechanical heat will be necessary once the outdoor temperature fall below a certain point. Conversely, in warmer climates and seasons, the house may be kept cool by shade and the retention of cooler temps from the night before. This highly energy efficient standard is achieved by: super-insulation, super-tight building envelope, high quality fresh air exchange system (HRV/ERV), and highly efficient mechanical systems.
