Tom was hired to renovate our second bathroom and part of the job involved building a small corner shower. Before I explain the primary issue at hand, I’ll say that Tom left our property a complete mess after finishing the job. I spent hours vacuuming, washing walls, scrubbing hardened mortar mix off my back deck and picking up cigarette butts. In the months following the completion of the job, my wife and I avoided using the shower as it would wake up our infant son. After renting our condo however (6-7 months after the job was finished) our tenants began using the shower daily and our neighbor downstairs reported water pouring down through the light fixture into their closet (directly below the shower). We paid to have the shower inspected by two licensed master plumbers and both said the following a. The issue was a faulty rubber membrane underneath the base of the shower b. The better way to build a shower is to use a “copper pan” vs. rubber membrane because rubber membranes frequently rip and cause leaks (go figure). Tom came by and inspected both the shower and our neighbors closet (which is now completely rotted, torn open and in need of complete restoration). First Tom shifted the blame onto the plumber who installed the drain, but later we confirmed that the water was coming from the perimeter of the shower base and not the center. Then Tom suggested that we apply a silicon seal over the top of the shower base (aka the famous “The Duct Tape Approach”). I pushed back saying that just sealing it a. Wouldn’t solve the root cause of the issue b. Would likely leave us in the same situation in the near future After a lengthy discussion on the back porch (away from our tenants), we agreed that I would repurchase all necessary supplies (despite none of this being my fault) and Tom would rebuild the shower base. We then went back inside, collectively relayed this plan to our frustrated tenants and set the date for 3 weeks out. 6 weeks later Tom came by and proclaimed “I figured it out! We just need to cover the shower base in Silicon”…(aka “The Return of the Duct Tape Approach”). When I asked him to fix it as we discussed (actually fixing the rubber vs just sealing the floor), he walked out of the condo saying “he was done.” Tom Brady Carpentry left me with a. Frustrated tenants that have been without their shower for weeks b. Frustrated neighbors with a ruined closet (who happen to be expecting a baby in a month) c. A bill to repair my neighbors closet (~$1200 d. A bill to pay another contractor to analyze/fix the shower (~$3000) I had two contractors by last night and they both confirmed that the temporary fix (silicon on the floor) would in fact fail in a year or two and commented on the lack of quality in the workmanship in general. I obviously couldn’t be more disappointed with Toms work and failure to stand behind it. I was patiently waiting for him to do the right thing and help me fix my shower…Instead he walked out the door and completely left me hanging.
