Took FOREVER to get the job done! Kept putting me off, month-after-month. Finally, after several months he got the job done installing a new commercial security door. I was too tolerant with him...

We moved to the Pittsburgh area last year and of course made arrangements to have the locks in the house changed. I stopped in at his shop and was greeted warmly by his staff. We made arrangements for Ben to come by and perform the work. He showed up at exactly the time he said he would be there. He performed his work efficiently and charged what I considered a very fair price for the work. I have recommended Ben to several family members and friends and all have been very happy with Ben's work and prices. Finally, while I value competence and efficiency in people with whom I deal for services I need, I also value a friendly demeanor. In addition to being a great locksmith, Ben is just a really nice guy. I recommend his services without hesitation.

Regretful hire… If you are looking for a locksmith who overcharges for his work, performs the work poorly, and then has the nerve to charge you a second fee to fix HIS mistakes, then Ben Scherer is the locksmith for you! It all started when Ben’s “receptionist” under-quoted us for his initial work. After he performed his “service” at our home on 3 doors (re-keying services), 2 of the doors we had him work on were rendered useless (1 of which was solely his fault). It then took two weeks to get him to come back to correct his mistakes. When Ben came back the second time to correct his mistakes, he presented us with a $78 bill as he was about to leave. My fiancé asked what the $78 dollars was for, and Ben argued that it was the “service call” to have him come to our house. My fiancé questioned this, as his visit/appointment was scheduled for him fix his mistakes from the initial visit (door 1). Ben called us liars when we told him we were not informed that it would cost additional money to have him come to our home and fix mistakes he made (mistakes which he admitted to). Ben tried to argue that the appointment was scheduled for the 2nd door ….which is NOT true. We simply had him look at this door to ensure that this too was not his fault (which it was not). When we asked how much it would be to fix the second door, Ben replied “it’s a $3 part”, so we had him proceed. At no point in time did he ever mention this would be more than $3 or that he planned to charge us an additional $75 on top of that. My fiancé told Ben that he would be happy to negotiate a different price, given the work Ben was billing us for took 10 minutes and $3 in parts, to which Ben replied, “This is the price and is how it is, if you don’t want to pay I’ll have the constable come to your house.” Had we been told ahead of time that this second appointment would cost additional money, we would have never scheduled it in the first place and would have simply purchased new handles and installed them ourselves, eliminating the hassle and displeasure of working with this man. We reluctantly paid the second fee he absurdly demanded, because we wanted him out of our home asap! Poor craftsmanship. Veiled threats. Horrible customer service. These are the phrases that describe Ben Scherer Locksmith. When in need a locksmith, look elsewhere!
